Title: Confirming Steps to make homemade 3.3kw charger?

Hi all,

I have been doing research and I am hoping someone who has done this mod or knows about it can help me confirm if I have the right idea.

Step 1. get a J1772 to 3 prong female lead

Step 2:
Buy Elcon 3.3v charger and get it programmed by the company.

Step 3.
Remove the SB-50 connector and replace it with a sb75x brown connector

Step 4:
When charging plug the Elcon into the end of the J1772 plug, connect the SB75x plug into the port on the zero.

Step 5.
Bike should now charge at 3.3kw?

Is this all the steps and does this information seem correct this is what I have managed to gather based on countless forum searching.

That plug/wire is only rated for 120vac input, not the 240vac from J1772 stations.

Much better quality than anything Zero offers and also at better prices.

So aside from the j1772 plug everything else makes sense?

No, should be ~4.7 KW charging. You also use the OBC which is around 1.4KW and it also works with 240 VAC. 3.3 plus 1.4=4.7 KW.


FWIW, I charge my 2017 Zero SR at as high as 8 KW on the road. I use two 3.3 KW Elcons but a different model than you showed there. Perhaps they make them smaller these days.


You also want to also use the OBC or you will have to leave the key in with bike on to charge.

Hi Don,

Thanks for the reply. I did read that you need to use the onboard or it will only charge keyed on. I do plan on doubling up. I am excited as I love the storage tank and don't wanna lose it.
