Title: Zero Battery charge cycles expected
Post by: ledmasters on September 09, 2022, 08:11:19 PM
I have seen many of the recommendations on the charging methods posted here from other members and was curious as to whom has got the most charge cycles on their Zero battery packs? The Zero Fx manual states battery life as 123,000mi, I guess this would be to 80% capacity and under ideal charge/discharge cycles. This would equate to over 1800 charge cycles from 0% to 100% or many more charge cycles using the suggested 20%-80% charge cycling. ( based on 68mi range for my Fx from 100% to 0%, or over 3000 charge cycles based on the 20%-80% charge profile giving only 40.8mi/charge)

So whom has the most charge cycles and what charge profile was used most often during those charging events? And what are your total miles achieved on a battery pack?

The charge cycles specified in the app are essentially nonsense, nobody knows what it's counting but it's not what you think it is. My bike was ex-demo with a tad over 100 miles on it so you'd expect charge cycles to be like 2 or 3 but it was ridiculously high, I don't remember exactly but I think it was in the 60s. It's better to just look at the odometer.

I have found that all of the historical information regarding my Zero provided by the app is nothing but BS and pretty much useless.

Yeah, the app charge cycle counter is useless unless you are actually depleting and fully recharging for every cycle, which is about the worst thing you could do for the life of the battery unless your trips were just that long. I typically use about an hour's worth of charge per day, so that's all I put in. I typically bounce anywhere between 40% and 70% SOH and use my bike pretty much daily since it's my daily driver. With the exception of once or twice when I forgot to set the timer on my plug, the bike has only been at 100% charge 3 times including when I first bought it from the dealer. The app shows 4 charge cycles after about 3500 miles.

Based on the SR/F manual, the number of cycles where the battery should remain above 80% of its rated capacity can be obtained by dividing the claimed 359'000 km with the city range of 259 km, and that gives us 1380 cycles. This is on par with what Energica wrote for their products.

From the "Total Energy Used" I get from the "Next Gen" Android app I can determine how often my battery was fully cycled. To date I have a total of 808 kWh and with 12.6 kWh as nominal battery capacity, that translates into about 64 cycles (from 1380).

I have these small usage figures because my battery was changed last fall, they correspond with what I rode in 2022.
