Title: New dash firmware
Post by: Mooseman on September 03, 2022, 12:52:05 AM
So I took my bike to the shop yesterday to have the CCM replaced and LED turn signals installed. I also asked if they could calibrate the speedo since my bike shows an 8% higher than actual speed.

What they did:

Re: needing to use a spot for OAT, isn't it a moot point since SOC is now always displayed? If/when I get my dash updated, that was my thought since I currently use a spot for SOC.

Also IIRC the process to turn on the heated grips may be different with the new dash. Either that or they didn't re-enable the feature for your bike so it doesn't know they're installed. Though even when it's not turned on on the old dash, the menu still comes up, it just says they aren't installed if you try to pick high/low. This is what my bike currently does as I installed the grips on my standard model, but haven't had the dealer activate them yet.

Hmm looks like it should be the same.

Finally, did you actually confirm your odo is reading high? It's very typical for bike speedos to read 10% or so high, but the odometer is usually spot on. That's how it's been for all my bikes. Check it against some mile markers?

Regarding the heated grip problem:

When LED turn signals are installed, the technician needs to edit the accesory_configuration setting for the Main Bike Board to prevent hyper flashing.  The value required depends on the on-board charging capacity and whether or not heated grips are installed.  If your technician entered the value for LED instead of LED + heated grips, your grips won't function.

Thanks for the responses.

Yes, both the speedometer and the odometer are showing about 8% more than they should.

Thanks, that is very informative. I'll check with the dealership. Sounds like they made a mistake.
Re: needing to use a spot for OAT, isn't it a moot point since SOC is now always displayed? If/when I get my dash updated, that was my thought since I currently use a spot for SOC.
It has been displayed before as well. I use the quadrants for
A: instant Wh/km
B: trip Wh/km
C: Range
D: Trip A

and I don't really want to sacrifice any of them. It's not a huge deal, it's just that I liked it better when the OAT did not use one of the quadrants.

Also, I noticed today that the bike basically doesn't care about some of the settings. When I came home last night I set the SoC target to 90% with charge target enabled. This morning the bike was sitting there at 100% SoC. I rechecked the settings I chose the night before and they were still there, but the bike doesn't care.
Another thing is that the app shows that ECO mode is active when in actuality it's the custom Beast mode that is active.
I continue to be less than impressed with Zero's software developers. It seems like they never test their software before they publish it.

I've just had the dash upgrade with the greyed out cyher111 menu items.

Sadly the new Trip Wh/mile is Fu*ked, just shows a slightly smoothed version of the "instantaneous" Wh/mile. Useless.
Plus the trip display has gone too.....
So its pretty difficult to get feedback on your riding habits.

My dealer, Davant in UK, has agreed to roll it back to the previous  version software next week.

I'm wondering why this happened.  My guess is that the cypher 111 software takes up much more memory that thought, especially when the level of security needed from UIY ( upgrade it yourself..) is added. So they dumped some features (trip for one).
Also the new screen takes away the focus on SOC, the circular display now featuring "speed". Is Zero trying to say don't focus on the battery charge display, just enjoy the speed..?

Anyway, if you're interested in using your trip Wh/mile figure to make your driving more efficient and extend your range, don't do the update.

pete.

After more than 10'000 km with the new dash firmware, I definitely prefer the one it replaced. Not least because the key informations were shown using larger fonts. My dealer told me that downgrading was not possible, let us know how this goes for you.

I had mine updated by Davant too - so far so good, works fine. I don't take any notice of Wh/mile readings myself, all I care about is SoC and trip meter being visible. I've got the trip meter on one of the quadrants now. The new fonts are too small and dim for me to read in dark mode which is a bit annoying. I much preferred the SOC ring on the old dash though - the new "speed ring" as you say is basically useless, there's a great big number in the middle that tells me how fast I'm going! Again as you say... they are probably trying to address range anxiety by just, er, hiding the display as best they can. This really has the opposite effect on me though  ::)

Still can't Bluetooth to my Pixel 4a :( Problem actually appears to be with the Zero app software not the bike - which talks just fine to my old phone.

Have you had your fans waterproofed Pete?

Cas :)

I don't mind the appearance in general of the new display but what bothers me is the teeny tiny little icons and displays. The quadrants are almost all blank space with little symbols. Also the time at the top left and the battery charge at the lower right... very small. Its so difficult to for me to tell the time now looking at the display that for I put a cheap digital watch around the handlebars. The old display contained more information and was much more legible. I didnt know that was being done when I brought my bike in last, and if Id known what they were doing and what the new display is, I would have refused it.

Probably the absolute worst offender of the whole lot are the selectable temperature icons. They are tiny, and white, and within that white border in an already small symbol is a little bitty sliver of color that is less bright than the white, so its very difficult to see. Terrible design.

Well, not great design, the sort of thing someone inexperienced might come up with to start with, but I guess Zero don't really have enough employees in this area with lengthy experience in UX. Or making firmware in general.

since this morning in France, there are 2 mbb and bms updates.
As usual, it doesn't work, it crashes all the time.
zero i hate you this morning.
If anyone has succeeded, could they point out the changes?
thank you

Was it done, did it work? When I last asked, my local dealer said that downgrading was not possible. I really would much prefer having the original, much more useful, and readable, UX version.

If not, then I assume this no-way-back strategy could be related to the new Cypher functions which are going to need the new UX, and Zero wants us to be able to use the Cypher store, at some future point.

+1 for New Dash FW being awful.
Old Dash is far superior.
I compared both thoroughly, on a '22 at the Dealer, and it killed any desire I had to upgrade to a '22.

A Zero tech did tell me (via email) that I could get "Parking Mode" and retain the old Dash FW.
Hope he is right...but I don't want to be the first one to try it  :-\

I don't think that's possible since Parking Mode is selected through the dash and the old firmware doesn't display that option.

And speaking of firmware discrepancies, the version on my 2020 SR/S (6V26) shows Automatic Updates as the last item in the Preferences menu.  However, the option cannot be toggled from No to Yes, and it's not discussed anywhere in the Owner's Manual.

Since the display only displays (not a touch screen), I would not exclude the possibility of new functions being directly actionable in the MBB firmware by the dealer. "PARKING MODE" would need to be selected ON/OFF using handlebar buttons. "10% FASTER CHARGE" and "10% EXTENDED RANGE" definitely do not require anything in the display to properly work. Regarding the "PARKING MODE" (reverse), it might be useful to see an "R" in the dash before drag racing when the light turns green. "ON-DASH NAVIGATION" definitely will need a new display firmware.

Hi Zelidar, just called my dealer (Davant, UK) to arrange the display roll back, was told zero have sent him an old dash to install as rollback isn't possible..  So you were right, but wrong.

So I'm OK, but I'm having to forget the parking reverse until they've sorted out the duff Wh/mile. Wonder if others make a fuss and ask for old dashes might make zero pay attention?

For me, most serious question is how do I tell the difference between Battery, System management and Dash software versions, so I don't update the wrong thing.  Actually I'm just going to ignore ALL updates :-)

Easy, you can't update the dash yourself. So no worries there.

If you end up with a spare dash then it would be interesting to take a look at it. If the microcontroller is something reasonable it could be possible to write our own dash firmware.

I decided to give the latest firmware a chance. Kinda against my own better judgment, but available firmware updates make me do crazy things, like installing them.

To my surprise both the MBB and the BMS update went through without any issues.

What they do or what they are supposed to do I don't know. I read the release notes but they basically sound like politicians. Many words, zero content.

Bike back from UK dealer (DAVANT) with new (unupdated) dash.
Ive got back my SOC on the circle and a trip and Wh/trip that I actually believe has meaning.
Thanks be to someone at Zero. They must know their software is flaky???????
Im now on NO UPDATES OF ANYTHING FOR A LONG TIME  :-) .

I upgraded from version 19 of both BMS and Bike to 21 BMS and 26 Bike today with no issues (first time ever I was able to do both in one go!).  I lost my custom mode as expected.  I wonder if they ever plan to fix that?  I guess I'll stay with my old dash firmware (I like it).

I went for an update at my local dealer - the really helpful Spark Motos in Addlestone, UK. Not just the dash, but some firmware in the chargers and they fixed the cellular that has never worked from new.

Unfortunately I couldn't get the navigation to appear on the dash for mt journey home. It works fine in the Zero app on my phone, but displays nothing on the bike. I'll have a proper look at it this weekend. I hope I can get it working, becuase that was the only reason I let then hit the dash with the ugly stick...

do you know if your cellular connection failure was software or hardware??

The cellular failure must have been suggested because my dealers got on the phone to Zero and with their help fixed it with the diag4zero app.

My navigation worked today too. I was sceptical when they said it might settle in and the cellular modem could update itself over the air once it has been online for a bit. Maybe that was the case.

If you end up with a spare dash then it would be interesting to take a look at it. If the microcontroller is something reasonable it could be possible to write our own dash firmware.

About a year ago, my dash suddenly developed a nasty "blob" close to the center that forced me to replace it with a new one.
The original one was firmware 5.5 (if my memory serves me well) and the replacement is 6.5.

I briefly tried to open it to see what's inside but it was very hard and I didn't have time that day and put it aside --and forgot about it-- until today, when I read the quoted comment.
So, after a lot of careful work to open it without destroying it, I managed to get the attached front and back photos of the board.
The only other thing inside the case is a small board attached to the back of the display, that has the ribbon cable going to the board.

The board was functional when I replaced it but I am afraid a drill bit went a bit too far and went through the board itself as seen in the picture (lower-right quadrant on the front photo).
I got frustrated after a tedious and long cutting all-around the case in shallow passes to avoid damaging the components.

That thing is designed to be very difficult to open and this one being the first one I opened, was a challenge.
Now, I could open another one in 20 minutes with no damage: experience is everything.

If someone with the right skill-set could write the firmware needed for this board to display things nicely (as opposed to the non-sense currently coming from Zero) it would be so very wonderful!

Thanks for the pictures. It looks like a Renesas RH850/D1M1A automotive MCU, which is intended for instrument clusters.
Quote
The RH850/D1M microcontroller has up to 5 MB embedded flash, 3.5 MB embedded RAM and dedicated features for instrument clusters with middle or high level 2D drawing.
https://www.renesas.com/us/en/products/microcontrollers-microprocessors/rh850-automotive-mcus/rh850d1m-high-end-automotive-microcontrollers-instrument-cluster-supporting-basic-or-low-level-2d-drawing#overview

I don't have any experience with Renesas devices, but they don't look to be anything out of the ordinary. There are no obvious debug connections, but they may well be on the large central connector. The easiest way to do anything would be if Facomsa supply a dev kit, but I suspect they're only interested in talking to OEM companies. It should be possible to get a debugger and IDE from Renesas, although given the target market it's likely to be expensive.
