Title: CCS not reliable? No kidding?

What I too have been saying about CCS. (https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/technology/electric-vehicle-owners-are-fed-up-with-broken-ev-chargers-and-janky-software/ar-AA10L951?ocid=msedgntp&cvid=b3dab4b796bd4cd4a67d5b5c05ca4516)

But a lot of this is anecdotal, and it can be hard to find any rigorous studies that capture the current state of EV charging in the US.

I have yet to be stranded because of broken stations.

I came very close today. Two broken ones in a row. I made it to Fernley, NV from Silver Springs after Fallon. I had 3% SOC left when I got to Fernley, riding very slow.

Strange thing is Silver Springs CCS worked fine this morning. Could not get any of them to work on the way back, not even after a phone call. However, the problem could have been my account. But not even a credit card direct would work.  And I wish they would hire people on the other end of the line who could speak a little English at EV Connect.

Less of an issue in S. CA as there are many more CCS charge stations than here in NV.

In France there are very few CCS charging stations, which makes Energica a risky option unless you're only charging at home. A broken CCS station will be more dramatic because there will be no available option around - which is not the case for type 2 (even in the most remote places there will be several options).

But CCS is combined with J-1772. I think that is what CCS means, Combined Charging System. Just about any EV can use J-1772, including Energica.

Yes but with a very long charging time, or not ?

3KW. Perhaps 30 miles /50 km of slow riding added in an hour or so. It would be nice if Energica could squeeze in a 6 KW AC charger.

Even the New York Times has picked up on this subject.

I have never had a charge station stop in the middle of the charge. There is a 20 second initiation on a  CCS DC fast charger where it is in communication with the vehicle to figure out how it needs to charge it. After that, it either gives an error message (NOT uncommon!) or starts charging. But when the charging once starts, it is okay to walkway, and I have never seen them stop until the end after the real charging starts.

Has anybody here had them stop in the middle of the charge?

I've only used CCS chargers about a half dozen times and they've worked without issue. I have had 240v public L2 chargers completely stop charging or do a weird stop/start multiple times during a charging session. This has happened about a dozen or so times since I've owned my EVs. Since my bike is what I use the most, it's the EV that's experienced the issue the most although my Chevy Bolt experienced it once at Blink L2 charger.

The only problem I have with charging stopping is when I use a 14 KW Tesla destination station with my Elcons, using a Tesla-Tap on my Zeros. It will charge for five minutes and stop and then I have to disconnect and reconnect for another five minutes of charge.

It does NOT do this when I use the Tesla-Tap on my Energica.

It does not do it with the Elcons on other than the 14KW Tesla destination chargers. It will work perfectly on the 12KW in any combo.

Perhaps the 14KW Tesla Destination charge stations are detecting something I am not using, such as detecting that I am not using the pilot signal.

DonTom,

Yes I have had a CCS charger cut off in the middle of a charge before. An EA station on NC 70 in Raleigh. It started to charge and once I thought it was good to go I left and got something to eat. Came back and found it had shut off and the bike was only partially charged. Got it charging again and just stayed there and watched it.

I would say it was an issue to get them started when you and were at the Wal*Mart in Elk Grove.

BTW, I have been back there since, and I could not get it to work at all. But there was another CCS charger a couple of miles away that worked perfectly. I wasted more time at that Wal*Mart than riding to the other place and completing the charge.
