Title: Keyless "Key not found" in mornings
Post by: tunafish_phd on July 11, 2022, 11:23:31 PM
Hey all. Got my '23 Ribelle 2 weeks ago.. Seems like in the mornings after its been charging, the bike has problems picking up my key... But only the first time I start it up in the morning. Anyone have similar issues? I've already replaced the battery in the fob and I'm usually sitting on the bike with the fob in my breast pocket when starting up.

Thanks!

Only at that location? Could it be some type of radio interference? Since the Energica is made in Europe, the FOB frequency is probably 433.92 mhz. In the USA, they use 315 MHZ. What's in your garage? Cordless telephone?  Wireless router? It can even be on a different frequency because of harmonics and subharmonics and other types of spurious RF radiations. But that would be  a place to start.

Happens once in the morning in my garage. Only interference sources would be my phone or potentially the garage door opener? But again.. once I get past the first startup in the morning, no matter where I am it seems to be fine. Just a weird quirk I suppose.

Hey Tuna, How long did it take to get the 2023 Ribelle?

Garage door openers often also operate at 315 Mhz, but that is the USA FOB frequency, not Europe.

Could it be right after you open the garage door or something like that?

The real test would be to have your bike at a different location in the morning.

And could it be temperature related? Extra cold mornings there?

Hey Tuna, How long did it take to get the 2023 Ribelle?

Ordered at end of March. In Oakland in April. Released from customs in June, received on the 2nd of July.

Could be right after I open the garage door. Tomorrow morning I'll let it sit for a while before trying to boot up and report back

My MY23 Ribelle almost never goes first try, but always goes on the second try. Got used to it :P

This feels exactly like what my bike does.. Almost like it doesn't boot the keyless system in time the first go after sitting for a while. Maybe its going to sleep or something?

I always look for the red light flashing three times I know if I see that I’m going to have to push the button again

Tried doing the tap/wait for 3 flashes/hold thing this morning.. Same issue.

Also had a "key not detected" issue parked in the walgreens parking lot this morning as well. Maybe its just me?

Most bikes have receiver/antenna under seat, not sure about Energica, Where ever it is, place FOB closer.

Front left faring. Will try to put key on the receiver later.

If the FOB doesn't work at all, is there still a way to use the bike?

Such as with my Harley. If FOB doesn't work, enter in a six digit pin number.

If my Experia (on order) doesn't have a backup procedure for a lost or broken FOB, then I will NOT want the FOB.

Yes. I can use a pin to still use the bike.. Just kind of defeats the purpose of having a fancy keyless system.

You're not expected to have to use it. But it's a way to get back home when your FOB battery craps out during a trip or whatever. Even if it's lost--an advantage over a key.

I know the older Energicas had an issue with the keyless system, but I thought that issue was fixed. What I heard was Energica now has a different supplier for the keyless module-for around the last year or so.

They should use the keyless system manufacturer that BMW uses on their bikes. Mine works very well and I have never had an issue with it over the past 7 years, plus the Fob has only needed its battery replaced one time.

Regarding keyless function and FOB range issues, the following is a single data point.

My Eva Ribelle: 2021 (took delivery Q4 2020)
Firmware: EN.A.002041.037 (current - never updated)
Keyless Functional Characteristics:
1- No out-of-range alerts.  If bike is GO and FOB is left behind, bike operates normally.  Done it before and had to call wifey to deliver FOB.
2- FOB range when bike is off is ~1 meter.  If Key/FOB is in seat lock, bike starts fine, quick press just once works.
3- FOB range when bike is GO, same as above, ~1 meter.
4- FOB range when bike is charging <<1 meter.  This one is perplexing but consistent and repeatable.

Holy crap. I think I just found out what I was doing wrong... So I've been holding the button down until it starts.. which it would ask me for my pin every time. I just went and tapped on the button... Fired up no problem.

THANK YOU.
