Hello everyone,
I am planning to buy my first Ebike and was looking into buying Zero FX 3.6 modular bike. Looking at the battery pack, I was wondering if there are any issues with Battery heating during application (running) considering that it is air cooled. Moreover, what are some of the precautions necessary for avoiding excessive thermal heating?

it depends on your riding style. If I am chilling, no issue. If I pick up the pace moderately, the battery gets hot in 20-30 minutes...especially on sunny days. This is with a 7.2 FXS. No idea how fast and how long you could ride with half of it.

What sort of use are you going to do. I have some battery tools with no cooling and a ktm with 3.9kwh battery (nominal not badge as Zero has called it) As long as you start with a cool battery the point the battey is too hot is pretty close to the point it is depleated. There is a point say 90 to 100 degrees F really need take something else unless the batteries are refrigerated at the begining and spares insulated.

Having owned 2 Zeros since 2015, this has never been a concern whilst riding, charging, or ever! I’ve never felt that the batteries were ever too hot. Enjoy your bike!

On a very hot day, I think it was summer 2020, the charging stopped before reaching 90%. Since then I favor charging stations where I can park my SR/F in the shade, but that is not alway possible. Overall, not a concern. While driving I have never had any heat related problems.

As someone who's been into ebikes for a while, I'd say air cooling for ebike batteries, like on the Zero FX 3.6, generally does the job pretty well. It's true that your riding style can impact how hot the battery gets. If you're going for a leisurely ride, you likely won't have heating issues. But on a more intense ride, especially in hot weather, the battery might heat up more.
Starting with a cool battery, as Fran K mentioned, can make a difference. Also, parking in the shade while charging, like Zelidar does, can help keep things cooler. However, it's been my experience that these bikes are designed to handle a fair bit of heat without trouble.
Overall, battery overheating isn't usually a big concern with most modern ebikes, including the Zero models. Just ride smart and keep an eye on your bike's performance in extreme conditions.

Unless you are really riding the bike hard, air cooling should not be a problem at all, many bikes are air cooled and are not suffering any ill effects from it. If you are worried about cyclic heating, ie charge / discharge, try to keep the bike in the shade when charging /stopped or put a small fan on it blowing to help it cool, but otherwise, it really should not be an issue.
