First post, I purchased a used 2016 Eva that was layed down almost 99% cosmetic damage, like a grass slide.
Problem is it's been sitting for almost a year and the battery seems completely dead.
I tried to charge it at a public charge station but it wouldn't initiate.
I'm not sure if I was doing it correctly or if it's so dead it won't start charging, or if I need to check anything before I start.

Is your battery SOC at 0? 0 miles of range left?
You could have better luck with a J-1772 charge. An AC charge avoids the initiation process by using the charger in the bike. Do you have the granny cable for the bike? Or a J-1772 that you can use?
CCS charging is rather picky during the initiation process. It will not start the charge if it doesn't like what it sees. IOW, out of range of what is expected.
What I am thinking is the voltage is too low for the DC initiation process but it could be okay with an AC charge. IAC, you want to get it charged ASAP, the longer you wait, the more likely it is to do permanent battery damage (if not damaged already).
The worse thing you can do to those batteries is leave it for many days totally discharged. But there is still some chance that it can be recovered.

Did you ride it to the station or did you just trailer it there and plug it in?
Are there any flashing lights on the dash? Specifically there's an intermittent pulsing red light that is an indicator the main pack is still in the safe zone.
If that's not working you're going to need to take it to a dealer where they can check the voltage of the main pack and assess its condition. Whereabouts are you?

The last Zero DS I brought there they couldn't fix and asked me to pick it up. It just stoppedd running. So beyond me or the dealership?
I'm working with Energica east cost headquarters at the moment. I wouldn't mind giving Team Powersports another chance, I'm not sure Sev was working there when I had the Zero.

Tepco, I'd be amazed if that battery wasn't completely dead. I wish you luck with it but it doesn't sound good.
I would like to know what a replacement battery costs on one. I don't remember anyone posting a battery replacement issue before.

So I found out today that it had power in May, and was sitting since then. I'll be bringing it to the dealer this week. I have no idea what a battery cost for one but I might be able to answer that question soon enough..lol..

The thing I'd be thinking about is "does Energica have any replacement 13.4 packs?"
I doubt there's been a single order since the + models were announced and I wonder how much old inventory of the EIG cells they have.

The 13.4 bikes are listed on Energica's main site as well. What I'm saying is I don't think a single one has been ordered/sold since the (+) models were announced. If you ordered one from AF1 right now there would probably be a brief pause at the factory in Italy where a line worker goes, "Shit. Does anyone remember how to make the old packs?"

I confirm 13.4kWh bikes are still an option customers can order. Not sure why someone would pick a bike with 60% less battery capacity and no EMCE motor...?

Been there! The Mooresville location is actually where I picked up my Eva 107 as TPS wasn't a dealer at that point. A few weeks after that the 600 mile service was due and Chris and Stephano flew out to my house for the service. Stephano went up to Raleigh to talk with TPS about becoming a dealer and an agreement was reached.

I looked at one from Germany that had cells replaced due to owner having left the bike at 0% for too long (no idea how long). I got the answer from Energica Italy directly - the dealer that had the bike gave me the VIN number.
Decided to not go for it since I wanted traction control with that much instant power. It was a 13,4 kWh EGO. Bike has been shipped to Modena (Italy) for the repair. Hopefully Energica US can do this if it’s the case.

There is a specialized tool to 'wake' the battery cells so a qualified technician can close the contactors and check the voltage. From there they can assess whether or not it is safe to try and charge the cells again. You'd have to know precisely which of the connections to the battery are the correct ones, and there's like 30 of them, and in which order to apply the right amount of current to them. To that end I will repeat: This is beyond you. Please call Sev.

I'm going to try Sev again tomorrow. Before I ship my bike to CA I'm trying to find out if the battery is salvageable. If it's not, I might be at the end of the road.

This bike is for me not a flip. I make videos to help others repair their bikes. I bought this one to answer some questions and because I really enjoy these EBikes. I rode a ZERO DS for a few years and a live wire just recently. Energica has given me an estimate on replacing the battery but shipping the bike across the country is costly. He gave me several options , I'm still working with him so I'll give a complete outcome when it's completed. The toughest thing right now is that there is no one on the east coast that can repair these batteries. I'm hoping Sev can at least tell me if it's salvageable. But from what I'm understanding from Energica, dealers don't have the tools to bring it safely back to life. The total amount of replacing the battery and shipping may be cost prohibitive.
So to summarize, if I can find out if it's salvageable I'll ship it, if it's not, I'm not sure I'll ship it for a replacement. I'll just hang on to it waiting to find a crashed one with a good battery, or a company that can make me one.

Yeah electric is a whole new world.
I got both of my Zeros shipped to me with U Ship. Much cheaper than any big shipper.
I'm in GA with one bike from FL for like $250 and one from CT for like $400.
The key was being very flexible on time. They wait until they have a few pick ups and drop offs in both directions before they go.
MVetter and I disagree on a different matter but he does know these bikes well. Powersports has been a very good source of help for both Zeros and Energicas. The biggest issue is does the dealer have techs who are excited and into the electric future and are learning all they can about the systems beyond the basic training or are they old school and resistant to the change.
Powersports seems to have some good guys.
The one thing that disappointed me with Energica was, when they first came out they were supposed to be future proof. I won't say "promised" but they did clearly state that if they made newer better batteries then they could be swapped in the old bikes.
That seems to no longer be the case.
That's one of the reasons I was wondering what they would do with a dead battery. Also if they would fly a tech into Powersports to replace it on the East Coast since that would be the best option for you as a customer, or owner since you got it used.

I just got a quote for $950 one way NC-CA.
I have used Uship before for around $300 on the same coast. Gas is really affecting shipping prices. I am a large proponent for Ebikes and have to defend my view quite a bit. I still own ICE bikes actually several but my plan is to make this bike my primary. Due to the cost of shipping my cheapest option, if the battery can't be saved is $7500. Not sure I'm ready to swallow that just yet.
Gruber automotive repairs Tesla batteries and I've been talking to them about repairs. We need options for this industry to grow and be accepted. As much as I repair other people's bikes I don't think the situation this Energica was put in is unheard of. I'm not exactly sure how long it's been dead, I know it was crashed in April and had power then. And had power for sometime in the tow yard. So I'm hoping the bike shut itself down when it got extremely low and can be saved.

Thanks for the replacement ballpark cost. It isn't cheap but could be border line cost effective based on the market value for a 2016 Eva, and what you paid for the bike.
I think the new Energica have a long term hibernation mode but I really can't remember what year that went into being.

You know Rich rebuilds is a great idea, kind of the pioneer of DIY repairs on Tesla's. I think he understands the battle. I sent them an email we'll see the response. He has 3 shops up and down the east coast now.

If someone does take this battery apart I'd love to see pix of the inside. These batteries should have a BMS somewhere to protect the cells. You really need to figure out a way to probe the physical cells to see what the voltage is. Can you purchase any service manual from Energica?

Yes. AF1 has the manual. Looking at it now but only shows how to remove the whole battery with explicit directions NOT to open it up "no user serviceable parts inside". :'(

If your gonna buy a new battery I'd say crack it open! take pix.. or sell the used / dead pack. I bet the balance and protection circuit is inside there.

I have a service manual now, looks easy to pull the encased battery. As heavy as it is I'm not sure it would be cheaper to mail it or just ship the whole bike. I'm getting better quotes so most likely I'll ship the whole bike incase they run into any issues swapping it out.
It's much cheaper for them to swap it out then me.to buy one and swap it myself. Most likely a core charge reason.

I'm willing to bet he's reading an LED off his EVSE that indicates the pilot signal has been accepted so it is actively supplying the onboard charger with AC power. However, as his battery is likely well below the threshold that the onboard charger can deliver, it will do nothing. The bike has not reacted at all during this time.
That is my blind guess. Bike is not charging. OP bought a bike with a toasted battery having no idea how any of this works and now has a chip on their shoulder.

There recently was a guy who laid his electric bike down or something along those lines. The dealer in the interest of safety drained the battery to 0 state of charge and gave it back to him. That one is kind of more interesting as it involves what collision coverage means and hence the rates for the insured. Ant the total cost of ownership being lower advocates and their logic.
I don't know for sure but the thought that this whole thing is in the hopes of someone or multiple folks contacting you saying if you part it out how much for this or that certainly comes to mind. You did not pay more than what the good wheels and shock absorber and forks are worth did you?
How about the other guy on here helping via private messages is that working out, That also goes for the helping guy and how realistic this user here is.

Sev had a lot of good info and it was a pleasure talking to him about Ebikes and some of the components on the bike. I was there picking up a Zero. He also answered some key questions about the state of charge. Basically he said it needs to be sent to Energica to be fixed. He said he wouldn't have his techs swap the battery because it was to time consuming. He also said that he wasn't even allowed to sell me a service manual.
I went home and purchased a service manual on line. Looking through it, removing the whole battery unit looks easy enough using the proper safety methods and much less entailed than removing a gas engine. Energica offered that I just send the crated battery which will be the option I choose. I have 3 other bikes in the shop now I need to finish first before I get into removing the battery. I am also having a new shop built as business is picking up.

I would agree if there wasn't companies that repair ev batteries like Gruber. I will agree I'm learning the EV world, so I like to do a lot of research. There are more than one company that repairs EV cells. That's why refurbished battery packs are available. The only problem here is that not many have messed with Energica battery packs. These bikes are repairable, BTW this bike is not salvaged, it's a clean titled bike that suffered a low side and now has a dead battery.

They do not repair. They replace the dead or weak cells. Thus the 'pack' is repaired, but the batteries themselves cannot be.
I don't know what condition your cells are in, but the hope is that they're above 2.00vdc. An EV cell's happy range is anywhere between 3.2 to 4.2vdc, and these numbers vary slightly based on chemistry, manufacturer, and probably dozens of other criteria. If the cells dip deep into the land of 2 volts, they can often be cautiously revived. I am *hoping* your cells are in that realm, but if they measure the pack and it's below 160vdc, every cell is considered toast.
The reason I use that number is because these bikes are in an 80s (series) configuration, normally operating between ~270-330vdc. Knowing this you can math out values for cell voltage vs pack voltage.
Basically fingers crossed at this point.

Ive got a 2021 Ribelle that was salvaged last year. According to the VIN records, it sat for a month before the salvage sale. The 21KW battery and electronics were removed and used in another conversion project and a 13 KW battery and electronics were installed from a 2018 eva. That eva was also salvaged and sat a couple months before being resold. I was told that this work was not done at the Energica dealer but by another shop.
It does show that getting a salvaged Energica can work out and that successful battery/electronics swaps are possible. Both bikes were lowsided, and didn't have much more than cosmetic damage. Im in the SF bay area and I suspect some involvement by local energica techs but don't know for sure.

Ive got a 2021 Ribelle that was salvaged last year. According to the VIN records, it sat for a month before the salvage sale. The 21KW battery and electronics were removed and used in another conversion project and a 13 KW battery and electronics were installed from a 2018 eva. That eva was also salvaged and sat a couple months before being resold. I was told that this work was not done at the Energica dealer but by another shop.
It does show that getting a salvaged Energica can work out and that successful battery/electronics swaps are possible. Both bikes were lowsided, and didn't have much more than cosmetic damage. Im in the SF bay area and I suspect some involvement by local energica techs but don't know for sure.
Again, it all depends on the condition of the pack and the cells. If the pack was at, say, 250vdc the bike won't turn on (someone smarter than me will know exact values) but the cells are likely still safe to revive. If the pack was at 15vdc, like the dead ones I had here, you take anything else of value and send the cells in for recycling.

It is a worthy endeavor to explore 3rd party battery pack reconditioning possibilities - I applaud the OP's efforts.
Why not engage in DIY support, in open source form perhaps where the community collectively benefits including OEM sales...
I'm all in on technical support. There's comprehensive documentation filed in the 13.4kw pack's patent work to guide diss-assembly.
The challenge will not be diagnosing bad cells or good practice in safety, the challenge is replicating pouch cell tab attachment means after securing suitable replacement cells which in itself is a hurdle, but this is where Mr. Vetter perhaps can lead us to a solution...could happen.
Laser welding is generally used in automation - if the packs are hand-built then resistive welding techniques are maybe at play? This is the discovery element that intrigues all of us and if handled methodically w/ good pictures to document each step, we can reverse engineer our way and not give anything proprietary away....hence off-list collaboration may serve best for sensitive discussion.

There are like 2 people on this forum I'd trust to crack open a case and start disassembling cell packs, and I'm not one of them.

I definitely don't want to open the cell pack up, mainly because if I did that I highly doubt Energica would take it as a "core" for a refurbished pack. I was interested in seeing if anyone refurbished cells on the east coast which doesn't look like there is. Companies that swap Nissan leaf, Toyota Prius, or Tesla batteries yes but just not enough Energicas around yet for anyone to dig into it.
I'll take photos and videos when we remove the battery pack and ship it off.
I think a battery exchange might be something that would work in the future? One thing I did find out through research is that several have had to have batteries replaced due to neglect or not understanding battery maintenance.

Newbie E bike owner here too in a similar boat.... I picked up a 2019 Energica EVA SS9 that has a blinking red light on upper left of cluster but will not charge on 110 garage outlet or connect via USB to phone. I will post a new thread but just checking here as it is kinda similar situation.

If you still have a blinking light most likely it is a connection issue or initiation issue. As far as mine it had no blinking lights or anything I'm sending ithe battery to energica for a test/ recovery or replacement.
