I wonder if there's another company getting prepared to enter Moto-E. If so, my money's on KTM.
-
I'm not sure there will continue to be a MotoE. I'm in the UK and watch the highlights show which include MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3. MotoE is completely left out. Whilst I'd definitely watch it, I think that's a sign that it's not that popular. (I'd argue that it'll never be popular if it isn't shown!)
-
Despite MotoE's low popularity, FIM plans to keep it going with their path to sustainability. Holding onto this racing class helps MotoGP's narrative going forward.
-
How can it be popular if it's left out?

MotoE was only contested at 6 of the 18 MotoGP rounds.

Are there even any non-Energica's in MotoE? Until more manufacturers start to complete in the EV space racing might be boring.

The original MotoE concept was for a single-make series, which runs through 2022. Energica got the nod. What Dorna plans for 2023 and beyond is still up in the air. It could be another single-make series, or multiple manufacturers could compete with some kind of balance of performance arrangement.
-
Hmmm well what company has a track fast bike?
ZeroBrian's Light Fighter would be great to see. If Zero backs them it would be very interesting.
KTM? Unless they have something developed in super secret they only have a pretty low end battery dirt bike.
Livewire? Good bike but no track star.
Triumph? They at least showed off a street bike prototype.
Who else? Who else?
Oh yeah Damon, who had posted a job opening for someone with pit crew mechanic experience. Yeah that's where I'd put my money.
-
There's the Mugen bikes, right?
-Crissa
-
Mugen for sure. Once Michael Csysz passed away (and the family decided NOT to continue his legacy) Mugen has ruled the Isle of Man electric class. It's just a damned shame Csysz passed away before his time. He designed a MotoGP bike just before they changed the rules to disqualify it. He jumped on the eMotorcycle bandwagon both feet because he knew even back then the future was electric. For three years he DOMINATED the Isle of Man until his untimely passing. He was America's "Dr. John."
-
Does Mugen make a street model? As a single-make series the current MotoE regulations don't have a homologation requirement, but if Dorna opens the paddock up to multiple manufacturers they may institute one.
-
Mugen are sort of linked to Honda. It's always seemed like the relationship was one that could be ignored if Mugen weren't successful but suddenly brought closer if Honda needed to kick start their electric bike efforts. There would obviously be a lot to be done before 2023, but Mugen / Honda would be my bet.
It seems the relationship isn't as covert as I thought. https://www.honda.co.uk/engineroom/bikes/world-of-mugen-tt/

The title of this thread seems to be patently inaccurate. Energica could be selected as the official Moto-E motorcycle after 2022 season right?

I made the title this way since Dorna Sports said Energica won't be the single manufacturer for MotoE. It's anyone's guess what's going to happen but I think it's safe to assume Energica's not going to have the only motorcycle (or if any at all) in the racing class.
-
WTF??? They don't even MAKE electric motorcycles!!!!
https://www.crash.net/motogp/news/989853/1/ducati-become-motoes-new-electric-bike-manufacturer
-
Well, Ducati may not make electric motorcycles now... but it looks like they will!
To be honest, I find that a more exciting announcement than if it was someone like Zero. Once the big motorcycle manufacturers jump properly into EVs then we should see some far more interesting models coming out.
-
Prediction: Audi purchases a controlling interest in Energica and rebrands their bikes as "Ducati."
-
Here is the story as published by Motorcycle.com: https://www.motorcycle.com/mini-features/ducati-will-power-the-all-electric-motoe-world-cup-starting-in-2023.html

Jaime, Shane Mcmahan's company just bought 70% of Energica so not too likely.
I know the Ducati CEO said how much he liked Zero's when he first rode them so Ducati getting into electric isn't a total shocker.
The thing is why only have one make? I understood when Energica was really the only race style electric bike but why limit it if there are more players now?
Through testing is fine and good but real competition makes things better faster.
All well. Someone will just start their own race series I guess.

I agree. Racing competition by multiple brands is the best way to advance the technology and make the racing much more exciting.

So you don't think McMahan wouldn't accept a huge buyout offier from the largest automobile company in the world (Audi is owned by VW which holds that title)? People make investments to make PROFIT and everyone has a price.
Electrek has a little more information on Ducati's history with electric motorcycles:
https://electrek.co/2021/10/21/ducati-which-makes-no-electric-motorcycles-to-supply-e-motorcycles-for-motoe-races/
-
While anything is possible, Ducati knew they were about to do this and if Energica was their target why didn't they buy them then before Mcmahan's company?
Just seems logical to me but there may be something going on behind the scenes that we're not aware of.
I certainly wasn't expecting another exclusive deal with any make.

Ducati has a year to produce a competitive E-Racer. Look how long it's taking Lightning and Damon to mass produce a STREET bike. Unless the plan is to put everyone on bikes the equivalent of those cheap commuter specials pouring out of China I just don't see how they're going to do it. The haven't produced ONE prototype yet, and we're supposed to assume they're going to be able to fill a grid in 12 months time? I don't see it happening.

I found it interesting that the article regarding Kawasaki's plans to develop electric motorcycles mentioned that they intended to retain outside consultants to help develop their products. Perhaps Ducati plans to do the same. Or more likely, the battery and power train technology will be developed and provided by Audi EV engineers and be based upon modifications to their existing EV equipment.

I agree as well. I would have very much liked to see MotoE opened up to multiple manufacturers with the caveat that they have an equivalent production bike, like other series.
That being said, while I don't know how Ducati is going to go from zero to providing electric race bikes equal to or better than what Energica has done to date, I also don't know what Ducati may have been working on behind the scenes. I'll wait and see what they come up with for the 2023 season.
-
Having some familiarity with independent electric motorcycle manufacturers, I can tell you that some of the first buyers of a new model are the big ICE motorcycle companies. I have little doubt that Ducati has an ongoing project team (and probably has had one for years). All I can say is it's about time.
-
I'm nothing more than excited about this news. Porsche and Audi have been making excellent contributions to the 4-wheeled EV world so I think Ducati's going to be able to pull from their success.
-
Don't forget they've been selling e-bikes in partnership with another company so they're not entirely out of the loop, too.
Of the big manufacturers, they're the ones with toes in the water... a few have scooters, but...
We'll see.

I'm not sure if I'm ready to watch a grid of professional motorcycle racers pedaling furiously around a track on Ducati eBikes... because that's all they have right now.
-
That actually sounds entertaining. I'd watch that.
-
You mean racers like this?
-
That can't be easy pedaling in full leathers like that!
-

You know what? Now that I think of it... I agree! ;D
-

That rider is no doubt anxious to get to the finish line quickly so that he can get his leathers off. ;)

Riding a class-three e-bike makes you feel like a god, I swear.

So this guy seems to be a great guesser about when and what type of electric bike Ducati will have.
Part of it talks about the 2018 interview where the Ducati CEO talked about electric projects.
