I'm doing some Wh/mile tests on my SR/F before fitting a fairing. I'm following suggestions on this forum to use the cruise control but find the cruise control switch maddening.
I've already fitted the extension lever to bring the cruise button nearer the throttle, but the bike is so powerful its almost impossible to keep the speed steady whilst moving my thumb onto the cruise control.
So I'm proposing to swap the cruise and the hazard switches over behind the headlamp, so the cruise is on the other handlbar (like normal bikes!)
I'm pretty sure both are simple press to close switches.
Am I lurching towards disaster? any comments welcome.

Lurching's the word... I don't know how you can stand the cruise control function on the SR/F, it constantly speeds up and slows down just enough to make me feel reaaaaally uncomfortable.
Otherwise though it seems like an eminently sensible idea.

I've never felt the need for cruise control on a bike. The whole concept seems dangerous and pointless. However, when I got my SR/F I had to try it I found exactly the same problem you did. It's impossible to press the button without holding the throttle awkwardly and lurching as you do so. I just won't be using it anyway so it's not a problem for me. Weird how Zero didn't realise this though. A can see how this bug might have crept into development, but do they not test these features in the real world?

It's a pain. I 3D printed an extension as well, and that's a little better, but it's still hard to hold the throttle still. It beats the "cruise control" on my '79 Yamaha XS-360 though, it was basically a clamp on the throttle with a quick release. Talk about safety!
I'm so spoiled with radar assisted cruise on my car now that I really don't like "static" cruise any more (too used to dynamic).

I see no reason why Zero would use anything other than a 2 wire naturally open momentary switch. See if you can find a photo online or pop yours open.
There is not a lot of real estate on the left side of the bars to add an extra easily accessible switch. A few Energica owners have come up with some creative solutions for repositioning their cc activation buttons.

Peter,
I posted the same suggestion a year ago when I got my SR/S. Do you plan to swap the wires at the handlebar or trace the leads to their control unit(s) and swap them there?

I agree it's a PITA to activate cruise control on a SR/F or SR/S. Apart from the suggestion to do that from a switch on the left handlebar, it would also be great to repurpose the MODE switch to:
quick push to the left: -1 kph or mph
quick push: use current speed as set speed
quick push to the right: +1 kph or mph
while cruise control is active. That would make it possible to finetune the set speed while cruise control is already active. The quick push would be helpful if you're going some 50 kph within city limits and then accelerate to 80 kph on a county road. As of now you'd have to cancel cruise control and then re-activate it once you're at the correct speed. With the change you could simply accelerate to whatever speed you want to go and then push one button to lock it in.
Obviously that can't be done with just a little bit of rewiring, it would require a firmware upgrade.

On the SR/S the wires all come together behind the display.
From testing for continuity I got the CC coming on the left side as blue/white+black, and the horn on the right side as orange+black.
I assume I can just cut those two wires and reconnect them the other way around to switch the buttons.

Isn't the hazard the same as Energicas where you push and hold the indicator switch? That would be done through software and not such an easy thing to swap.

No, there's a little button at the front underside of the LHS switchgear (which I only discovered by accident when I was trying to rotate it around the handlebars).

I thought about changing the switches also but now just hold the throttle to the desired speed and reach over with my left hand and use my left thump to push the cruise button. It is really pretty easy. To slow down I let go of the throttle and disengage the cruise control with either my right thumb or the rear brake and let the bike slow to the desired speed and quickly push the button again. To speed up you can disengage the cruise control with the rear brake and speed up and reach over with your left thumb to engage. I have my regen set to 60% throttle and 100% brake so if you disengage the cruise control the braking is not very strong so reducing the speed can be accomplished with only the right hand. Yes you have to let go of the left grip for a second or two but I only engage the cruise control when I'm going a steady speed in a straight line. Works for me

Well I did it and it seems to work for me. Tested it with the key off and the hazard works, but the Cruise didnt. Aaaagh. Then realised it needs to be in drive mode to work. Phew! test drive says it works.
I did the changes at the headlamp, opening up the connectors, testing for contacts till I found switched pair, used a fine nail to remove the yellow insert and then freed the pin. That way I can switch it back, ie no soldering etc. Its a pig to reach all the wires and I ended up modifying the headlamp bracket to make it easier next time (?get a life?)
Amazing to have better control of cruise, but it becomes obvious its fairly crude and could do with the software upgrading to car cruise levels along the suggestion above using the Mode key. Also the current algorithm is crude, it doesnt make a constant speed up and downhill. Probably needs full PID algorithm or constants upgrading.
So for me, the mod is brilliant. Dont suppose anybody could tell me the wires at the main controller board to swap instead of what I did?

Beware: I thought I saw some SR/S wiring that had different colours?
So best to break open connectors for both handlebar switches as shown and use a meter to check function when button pressed.

I totally agree. I often use the cruise control in built-up areas, where the limit is 50 km/h. If I start the cruise control on flat terrain and the street goes in a ascent after some time, the speed often trops to 45 or 46 km/h.

Same modification for me but in parallel on the blue/white and black wires (dsr/x), better manual cruise control .
