Title: Tesla destination charging around the SF area?
Post by: shayan on October 11, 2021, 09:03:51 PM
I'm planning a 200 mile trip and I would have to make a stop at San Francisco for an charge. I see a lot of Tesla destination chargers on plugshare in SF and most are hotels. Do they generally allow folks to charge even if I don't stay there?
Any of you guys have done that before? Just go into the hotel garage and plug in?

I would call the hotels for their policy. It would be extremely unlikely that you could just pull in and charge without a steep fee. Parking in SF is soooo expensive that it is hard to imagine that there would be no cost.

Most of the time you can just look at the station in question on PlugShare. People write notes about fees and usage. It's all there already.

I guess thats a wise think to do. I would just need about 45 mins worth of charge and i think it would not harm to call them a bit ahead.

Right, I did check on the descriptions and check-ins. For a few of them I could did not clearly tell if it meant that they would allow charging for ppl who did not stay at the hotel (or patreons). I mean, if i ask nicely would they let me charge? Dont mind paying a fee..

Some do, some don't, the plugshare doesn't always say.

I usually leave a nasty note if they won't.

I  just try to make sure I am not noticed. I have gotten away with it every time so far.  I have used countless Tesla Destination chargers on my Zeros and Energica. Not once have I been questioned by anybody or had any other issue.

However, none of them have been in SF. Most of the ones I used were in the Reno area such as here (https://www.plugshare.com/location/146827)

and here  (https://www.plugshare.com/location/71909)

and here. (https://www.plugshare.com/location/72044)  (notice it says "guests only" as I am charging withOUT being  a guest).

And here (https://www.plugshare.com/location/161493).

And I still put them on Plugshare as long as I get away with it.

FWIW, if  guests need to charge, I will disconnect for them, of course.
