BMW seems intent on introducing honestly bizarre prototypes.

A 600 180-mile range e-bicycle and a 37mph top-speed motorcycle. Both of course in their weird zebra livery and with no storage or faring.

When it comes to bizarre it is tough to beat BMW. ::) Who needs a 600-mile bicycle - which will no doubt be sold at an eye-watering price. :'(

300km would translate to 180 miles. Since it is a pedelec this means that the range can only be achieved by pedaling.

Range on a pedelec is limited by the human, not the battery. Especially on an EU legal one which cuts the motor assistance above about 15mph which isn't too hard to achieve on flat ground with just pedal power.

Pundits have commented elsewhere that BMW are not actually serious about these kinds of EVs yet, they're just playing around to flex and show off to investors that "they can do it too". Behind the scenes they'll be likely working on more serious production ideas but they're going to wait until the pioneers have matured the market for them before they bother. Which is a bit of a shame but then that's why I've got stocks in Tesla not BMW.

In the absence of any existing legal framework for a vehicle of this kind with a modular speed concept, the “AMBY” Vision Vehicles set out to prompt the introduction of such legislation and, by consequence, developments of this nature.
Not that these concepts will actually achieve that, BMW isn't the first to make a concept or even bring a product to market which can't legally be ridden on road and the laws still haven't changed, but it clarifies that they don't intend on on bringing them to market.

The legislation is pretty clear-cut here in the UK on the matter too, so not sure quite what their whining about it will achieve...

Okay, 180 miles of assist makes more sense. That's probably what a tourer could do with assist in a day.

Have you tried pedaling something this heavy without any support? I think you will realize that you are quickly limited by an empty battery :)

I have, I rode an e-bike before getting my Zero. I even used to pedal around a heavier unassisted bike. My e-bike was around 750w and would hit something like 26mph on flat ground without me pedalling, however I would regularly limit the assistance speed to 16mph because I could maintain a speed above that on flat ground so I would save on battery life by only using it to accelerate and climb hills.
