Title: California EVgo decides to pull their heads out of their asses for pricing
Post by: MVetter on August 20, 2021, 01:05:11 PM

Starting September 16 they will begin billing based on kWh instead of the previous time-based system. This is, of course, what CA legislated going forward. EA has already embraced this. Here's the major takeaway: EVgo's cool kid pricing is based on their $8/month subscription plan. However, if you are a AAA member, that includes EVgo's monthly subscription. That's a good deal. They don't really advertise it but here you go: https://aaanorcalpromo.evgo.com/

Use it.

Good move! So cell balancing is no more expensive and i do not have to end the session at the 58 seconds mark ;)

Thanks for that AAA info.  I had no idea about that, but I have been a Premier  AAA member for many  years.  I will probably never use it on my new 2022 Chevy Bolt, but I will for sure on my Energica once in a while, where the charge for time has been a real rip-off, especially when they control the time.

But most of my Energica charging will be at the Donner Rest Area to go between Auburn and Reno and that one is for free, paid for by Cal-Trans. I used it yesterday on my Chevy Bolt, just to try out CCS charging on it for the first time.

It was too smoky to come here yesterday on my Energica as I normally would.

Sidebar: "to pull their heads out of their asses for pricing" great hyperbole but what does it mean to someone searching for this discussion or looking to contribute? Please keep topics um, topical.  Asses are kind of off-brand for the forum (for want of a better description). If you really want, I can leave this up for discussion about asses. (!?)  :o

Sounds too military, "pull your head out . . ."  especially used a lot  in army basic training.

I knew what the topic meant when I read it...

They were pricing their chargers to seriously gouge Bolt and Leaf owners.

Yeah it sounds good until you have to wait an extra half hour for one of those Leafs or really any other EV to cell balance.
Of course the car may belong to a nearby employee that doesn't get off for 5 more hours.  But hey, it only charges for kWhs so no biggie, let it sit there.    ;D

This might lead to EVs being set up like the Audi ETron with it's built in "buffer" which prevents it from charging 20% of it's battery so it takes the full charge rate from E to F.  Of course you still pay for the full battery but you just can't use it.

As well as Energica. Many of my charges were twice the price of gasoline when I charged to full, which took some time.

No one said they can't charge idle fees or limit sessions in other ways.

But those cars were paying a higher price from minute 1.

So like a Zero?

1.  It wouldn't be an idle fee if it were pulling a couple amps cell balancing for a half hour.  Which they wouldn't do if they are billed by time but might if they have no where else to be.

2. No not like Zero.  Zero claims a theoretical capacity based on no voltage sag.  But if you come in at a 1% SOC and plug in it will slow charge until about 20% SOC, same with the top 15-20% ramping back down.
The Etron takes it's full rate from an indicated 0% to an indicated 100%.  You pay for extra battery you never get access to.  Nice huh?
They wanted to give customers the gas pump feeling with no tapering.

So what 'or other ways' would be.  Tesla kicks off the charging sessions and charges idles fees.  Here's nothing saying they couldn't have a session limit in another way; like late fees or charge a different kWh rate after a certain time.

2. No not like Zero.  Zero claims a theoretical capacity based on no voltage sag.  But if...
So like Zero, but they were less conservative on the charger programming.

1. The law is supposed to be kw billing.  If they allow idle fees then it isn't really just a kw fee.  But what I'm pointing out is the half hour an EV can take to balance the cells wouldn't be an "idle" vehicle sitting at the charge station.  It's still charging just very slowly.
Making the theoretical "you" wait until it's fully charged.

2. The Etron is the only EV that does that.  I can't explain how it works any clearer than I did.  Feel free to research it if you'd like but no it's not like Zero saying it has a 14.4 kWh battery and it is only, what like 11kWh usable.
The Etron is more like (not real numbers) saying it has 60kWh battery worth of range.  It would have a 100kWh battery that you pay for but you only get to use 60 kWh so the charging session doesn't have to safety ramp down the charge rate (kw) below 20% SOC and above 80% SOC.

Notably, if the EVSE/charger cuts off the car, it's not doing balancing.
Also, it doesn't matter if the charger is still running if there's a time-limit.

Yes, I know.  But the available SoC in a Zero equals to only using a max 80% of the rated battery capacity.  So... just like that.

1.  What is it?  Are those "ifs" in place?
Do you think it's ok to deny someone the ability to cell balance and keep their battery healthy just so rich people don't have to wait?
The point is instead of making stupid short sighted laws let the free market sort it out.  Someone will come along and only bill based on kw if they can make money from it.  Restrictive laws create oppressive over powered monopolies.

2.  Everyone's claimed battery size is bullshit but with the Etron you only get 60% of the battery you pay for on purpose with software restriction for the sole purpose of allowing full charge rate.  Show me any other EV that doesn't ramp down at the bottom or top end of charge.

If there's a high demand, we have to share.  So yes, you can cell balance in the off hours.

I was just told in the Chevy Bolt Forum that my 2022 Bolt somehow balances as needed at any SOC, doesn't need to charge to full. I know there are several ways to cell balance, but this is the first time I heard about the "as needed at any SOC".

I asked because we are not supposed to ever charge to full (to 90 % max for now) until the recalls are completed.

BTW, after the recall, we will get 8% more battery capacity and the Bolt will then have about the same range as my Tesla M3 LR.

BTW, I probably purchased the very last Bolt before the recall. The recall was announced the morning of the day after I purchased mine and now they cannot sell any more Bolts until after the recalls are completed. Cost to Chevy is more than a billion dollars for this recall as all the battery packs will be replaced in all Bolts, even the ones done after the last recall.

Hopefully, they get it right this time.

This reminds me of the Firestone tire recall. They had to do the recall twice because the first recall didn't fix the issue.

Hopefully third time is the charm.

Yes, cell balancing can be done a couple different ways, they're all about moving power from one cell to another so Zeros could balance at specific target SoC, which is why they were charging over the target SoC before.
