Considering just how much development money and time is going into battery tech by so many entities at the moment , no one should be surprised by non stop developments. Battery tech basically did stuff all for a 100years.

I wish I had a nickel for every lab-designed battery breakthrough over the past 20 years that never made it into mass production for the commercial market.

BTW, I wonder what batteries NASA is using to power that little Mars helicopter? I bet those would really liven up my Zero.   ;)

Tesla uses two different battery chemistries for their Chinese-made cars.  LFP batteries technically are cheaper up front and have a longer cycle life though lower energy density than their NMC high-aluminum batteries.

That would be on par with the old A-123, isn't it?

Frankly I can barely force myself to read these "battery breakthrough" articles anymore. 99,9% will never be commercially feasible. The rest is decades in the future. :(

By the way. Interesting story a coworker was telling me. Friend of his bought one of the Tesla Model 3's made in China. Apparently the batteries are lower quality than the regular Panasonic batteries Tesla has used. He claims the car is more than 100 kilos heavier, and has shorter range, than the Model 3's made with the Panasonic batteries.  Life expectancy to be determined.
I wouldn't call it necessarily "lower quality". It's a tradeoff. On average, compared to NMC chemistry, LFPs have worse energy density, are cheaper, but more life cycles and are considered safer (less risk of catching fire). Almost all EVs in China are LFPs.
Ditto many e-bicycle batteries.
