Yahoo finance has turned off the comment section.
I would think this internet forum is mainly users not investors. The article seems to say politics and investor behavior are related.

If it takes five-ten years to develop a car, well, they'd better be on in since the sunset for emissions cars is starting to show up in law makers eyes.
And why shouldn't it? Making a long-term decision now sounds good for everyone's lungs and the climate we live in.

Until you can solve the problem of distance and ability to charge in places like Australia ( or Siberia for that matter) fuel/fuelable vehiclesare going to have to exist. Once you get even a short distance( Australian short distance, not high density country short distance) there is nowhere to recharge . I lived in a place where the next large town was 350km in one direction, 390 in the opposite direction and 1000km to the west. In Western Australia there is a section of the main highway that has a inter fuel stop distance of 400km with absolutely NOTHING in between.
EV's make complete sense in towns and cities. Noone could argue that. But the majority of the world ( not people, actual world...) ISN'T in towns and cities. To go to the other side of town ( I live 8km outside town), and back is 80km round trip, with a large amount of 100kph road. Pretty much stuff all emotorcycles currently are suitable.
No I am not naive enough to think that anybody will give a stuff about anybody except those in cities. EV's are being mandated as the ONLY vehicles, meaning the rural areas will slowly become no go zones and even more disadvantaged than now.
In this country, most tourism is private motorvehicle. If you think the pandemic has hit the tourist industry hard, wait til there is only EV's.

Au contraire, I reckon that the motel will become a thing again, and the hospitality industry will thrive as places to stop for the night and recharge spring up. Also a thriving market in solar panels and enormous batteries in the desert.
Let's face it though the problem is not really ICE, it's the fact that 90% of journeys should probably never have been made. Or, it could be said, 90% of vehicles. We're spoiled children.

And 90% of structures should never have been built, and 90% of companies didn't need to exist, and there should have been 90% fewer births, and...
No need to regret history. I regret very few trips I've ever made, even if you regret 90% of the trips I made. :) I hope to make many, many more.

I heard yesterday that Exxon-Mobil lost a boat-load of money last year for the first time in the history of the company. The times they are a-changing. ;)

I remember when Exxon lost a boat load of money the year the Exxon Valdez ran aground.

But apparently not nearly as much as they lost this year. This year the boat actually sank. ;)

One data point from a pandemic year is hardly indicative of a long-term trend.

The price war was already ill-advised. But I think the Saudis are of the thought they can push the price down lond enough to kill exploration so as the demand curve comes back down, they can maintain scarcity. There'll be a gap between their price and shale & sand oil.

(Disclosure: I work at the very start of the oil industry, in exploration, for which I will go to hell)
Unfortunately for the world, the oil industry sees this as no more than a bit of an unusual blip on the radar. Underlying demand is still ludicrously strong, though not rising so fast as they would have hoped. They're still actively out there looking for more oil. Lots more oil. Peak demand, sadly, is expected to be in the 2040s. We are all truly f*cked.

Is that "f*cked" or fracked? ;)

Yeah there's no reason to think gas is going away anytime soon even if the value fluctuates. There's too much existing infrastructure and need to uphold that. EV's are only 3% of the new car market, and that says nothing to the billions of vehicles and other gas powered infrastructure that aren't new.
