Title: Tesla Tap question
Post by: JaimeC on January 27, 2021, 09:11:04 PM
Assuming I have an SR/F or SR/S with 12kW charging capability, what capacity Tesla tap would I want in order to fully realize the charging potential (again, assuming the Tesla destination charger puts out sufficient current)?  Is 40 AMP too small?  Is 80 AMP overkill?

Just want to insure I don't spend enough OR spend too much on my purchase.

Thanks,

On Facebook, ElectricTerry confirmed this would be adequate for my needs:  https://is.gd/SbZnD2

I don't have an SR/F with 12kW charging, but if I decide to upgrade from my S, I won't have to replace this if I buy it today.

Thanks,
240 VAC times amps=watts.  240VAC times 40 amps=9,600 watts. Too small.

12,000 watts. Divide by 240 VAC=50 amps is the smallest you can use for 12KW charging.

240VAC  times 50Amps =12000 watts

You can save a little by using this one instead. (https://www.amazon.com/TeslaTap-AMP-Tesla-J-1772-Adapter/dp/B07TP9VSQM/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=60+AMP+Tesla+tap&qid=1611778846&s=automotive&sr=1-5)

As the ladies say, Don... "Size matters."  In this particular case, smaller is better (easier to pack).  ;)

If you go directly to their site, you can get the best of both worlds.

Thanks, Ed.  I noticed their price is $50.00 cheaper than Amazon's and even with shipping still works out to $40+ less.  I have an Amazon gift card that I'd like to use (which I can't on the vendor's site) but I've reported the cheaper price to Amazon and waiting to see what happens.

I don't really need it right now but when the warmer weather comes around it'd be nice to have.

Bitcoin has been doing VERY well lately.  Combined with warmer weather and I finally pulled the trigger.  Amazon says I should have it before the Snyder Cut of Justice League premieres on HBO Max!
