Title: Regen stopped working?
Post by: Crissa on November 01, 2020, 02:40:04 AM
Today I had a bit of a surprise.  The bike was at 60%, and I ran my errands and... Regen didn't seem to be working?

I told it to save its logs, I got 128kb but now I'm not sure what to do to diaagnose.

It's charging now because I burned at freeway speeds up Mt Hermon so I used 35 points of charge instead of my usual 25.

I had that happen once a few months ago when my bike had nearly a full charge, but not 100%. When I pulled over and turned off the ignition the regen returned and has been operating normally every since. So apparently is was some sort of one-off glitch.  ::)

Were you above 95% SOC?   In Reno, I am at the very top of a hill. Regen is a bit weird. Sometimes I have full regen at 100% SOC but not in the high 90's.  I first noticed it just after a FW update.

But it never happens below 95%.

Why?  I have no idea.

My Energica regen is much more predictable than either of my Zeros from the top of the hill in Reno.

Yeah, sometimes I get regen at 100%.  Like it's in a I-wasn't-done-charging mode and it lets me use it to ride down the hill without losing any percents.  But if I'm at 95%, nope.

But that's what it felt like today, you pull on the brake and the light comes on, but there's no drag at all.  I hadta actually use my brakes, and I wasn't on a hill when I noticed.  I almost went into a crosswalk!

When my regen disappeared, I was above 95% SOC. However, at all other times my regen activates at 100% SOC without fail. (I live at the top of a hill so I use closed throttle and light braking on the way down.) That was not the case with my 2014 S. On that bike if SOC was at 100% regen would not activate for the first mile or two. However with the 2014 model, charging would stop at 117V, but on my 2018 model, charging stops at 115V. I suspect Zero changed the BMS to shut off the charger at the lower voltage for a reason.

Do Zeros maybe switch off regen when either motor or battery are too hot (after your freeway ride)?

Not that I know of, and the bike was pretty cold. The whole ride to the farmer's market and back is only about six miles. And it did it both ways.

]I know in later motors, no regen can be showing the start of a very serious motor control  problem. Ask Shadow about such  on his 2016. He ignored having no regen for a couple of days and then the bike tried to kill him. It just went crazy and the throttle would not reduce speed. He also said his kill switch didn't do anything. He had to reach for the key to shut down the bike.

I was the one to have his bike towed to the shop. Was way too dangerous to even try to ride and it happens with no other advance warning than no regen--at least in his case.

So Crissa, be careful, in case it can also happen in a 2014. Shadow ended up with  a new motor, IIRC, along with the re-commissioning (which I don't think applies to a 2014 model). His bike was still in warranty when it happened.

IAC, practice that you can turn the bike off with the key while riding!

Shouldn't the application of either of the brakes be able to stop the bike?

Yes, the brakes atop the bike.  While you're on it.  But if there's motor acceleration while you're not fully on the bike, it can be a problem.  (Which is why you should always flip the kill switch before getting off the bike and make sure it's off when you push or lift it.)

If you're asking about Shadow's bike, only he can say. I assume he tried the brakes, but  perhaps that only slowed down the bike a bit and made some smoke!

My brakes can overpower the motor.

This is supposed to be true of all stock vehicles.

Yeah,

I have heard that too and I have wondered how well  it works in reality when it's an EV  with a ridiculous amount of torque at WOT. With such an electric motor, it probably either runs or burns out.

You have to do the opposite of moto training:  Hold the rear brake hard.  Smash it, hard and fast.  The faster the better.  Because you want it to lock.

If it doesn't lock, the brakes will heat up and fail.  If they lock, then they lose heat and you win.

Doesn't matter the motor type.

100% with full cell balancing complete? If not then thats why regen probably worked. Its worked for me in this particular scenario :) (but was kind of not so predictable)
But when balancing is complete, regen may not possibly work is how is understand it.

How can you lock your brake while riding on a bike with ABS ?

ABS only cares the difference between the wheel's speeds.  It will totally let you lock the brake once you're not moving.  And it will stop you safely.  ABS is your friend.  Trigger it.

When your bike goes crazy , doesn t respond to the throttle and tries to kill you the ABS will prevent blocking the rear wheel since you are riding. If this happens in full traffic........

ABS will stop the rear from spinning.  It will attempt to stop the wheel as quickly as possible compared to the relative speed of your other wheel.
