Title: Rider Coaching Episode 1 : Head and Shoulders Made for Sam
Post by: Electric Cowboy on July 29, 2020, 04:18:58 AM
Testing out the new rig and software that was donated for me to make new videos by making a response to NewZeroland's mountain ride video.

Figure it might be useful to some other people as well.

Nice!  Yes, I got this technique from that Socal guy but his videos are all over the map.  It'll be nice to have another video to link to ^-^

His demonstration that you could do it at any speed was really cool, and his insistent that you can break it into any number of pieces; practicing just as much as you can each time but no more.  Head, shoulders, then butt, then legs...

I feel it's like dancing, doing a dip with a partner:  You lean over to lead but then stick to your relative position with your partner as you dip for the beat.

Your a natural teacher dude! Simple and easy to understand explanation of a complex concept.

The photos taken of me during track days have provided great feedback regarding what my body position actually looks like.
Just wish there was a easy way to record footage from a follow perspective. Need a chase cam like they have for paramotors

Alberto Naska has a very informative video series that also does a great job of talking about and showing small things that can improve your riding.
It's more geared towards the racer but some of it still transfers to the road.

It's not a cheap option but a 360 camera can work quite well, I use the Insta360 One R. A regular camera would also work just mounted on a stick mounted to the tail of the bike, but the 360 gives you some flexibility to adjust the angle and to keep the footage level.

Hey, how do you process you insta360 one r video?

I haven't figured it out yet.  Another thread would be fine.  ^-^

I can't get the tracking or follow to work right on MacOS and my iPad is so not powerful enough.

I haven't messed around with it too much. For that vid it's just a locked position (annoyingly you need to add a keyframe at the beginning of the clip to apply the position, I didn't realise and had to render it again) but I've done another clip where I changed the position, I just added keyframes where I wanted to movement to end and then moved it (I think that's how it went, it's been a while). Haven't even attempted to use the app to process it but from what I've seen it looks like it should be a lot easier, you hold down a button or something and then just turn the phone in real time to change the view.

I'm really not impressed with the desktop app, I couldn't even change the audio level to tone down the wind noise and it's just lacking features in general. I'd much prefer to work on it in Premiere (there's apparently a plug-in that's installed) but I haven't gotten that app to work for a while now.

Thanks!  That was my experience, too.

My copy of Premiere is about ten years old, so it doesn't do the video.

I guess I'll borrow my spouse's fancy ipad and see if that works better.

Nice vid!

I haven't seen any other vids - but have you mentioned 'counter-steering' in any of them?  I ask because the head-shoulders movement will cause the counter-steering, but often it's not explained in full.

I'm going to cover that much later. I think its better if it is already happening naturally before you start to think about it. Thinking about too much at once generally makes none of it go right.

The new stuff is amazing! But still very familiar. I did the 360 it in premiere, then rendered it out to reduce processor overhead in preview and final render. Sometimes I also use the phone to edit the 360 as I think it is a little better than the insta desktop app.

From Keith Code? He is a great teacher and was my first coach as well. Its definately a dance. I look at each bike as a full on relationship. You have to know all the ins and outs of communication and cooperation together. Healthy mutual respect is also required!

Glad you all enjoyed it!
