Title: Stupid Charge Station Locations
Post by: DonTom on July 07, 2020, 12:33:58 PM
Yesterday, I was at Cisco Grove, on I-80 in CA  Charging my Zero SR (@ 6.4KW). I noticed they are putting in new CCS DC fast chargers (not yet even mentioned on PlugShare, other than in my own check-in <with photos>) and another J-1772 charge station. And I ask myself, Why? In either direction there are more CCS chargers within a few miles as well as a little used J-1772  station right there, a few feet away, that I was then using.

Between here and Reno, there are MANY  CCS chargers these days, as well as several J-1772s.

But why do they keep on grouping them together? How about being able to charge in Portola,  CA or Quincy, CA or LoveLock, NV? We don't need any more charge stations in the area where they keep on adding more and more every few miles for no apparent reason. On my many trips to Reno and back, I have yet to see ANYBODY use a CCS charger other than myself. We don't need more in that area.

But we do need them in countless other areas.

/Rant off.

Probably,  the answer is very simple: the connection to the electrical network was already available in that place, so, they didn't have to deal with that on a new location 😁

I've seen some... not necessarily "stupid" but definitely puzzling... locations here.  For example, in the middle of an office complex, there are a couple of J1772 ChargePoint stations open to the public.  We have them in our office building, but they're for employees only.  So what do they expect someone who DOESN'T work there to do while waiting for their vehicle to charge?

On the Long Island Expressway there is a HUGE welcome center with ChaDeMo charging stations ONLY.  Who still uses ChaDeMo??  Wouldn't it make more sense for CCS??

And two weeks ago PlugShare directed me to a ChargePoint station at a college campus out on our East End... but the campus was CLOSED!  Thank God for three things:
1) I was able to enter via the "Exit" gate
2) The ChargePoint stations hadn't been powered off
3) Campus Security took pity on me.

Yes, I did update PlugShare to indicate the campus was closed and HOPEFULLY people will attempt to find something else in the area before they run completely out of power (if I weren't able to use those stations, I would've had to call for a tow because I wouldn't have been able to reach the next closest station).

Smart places (to me) are shopping malls, and parking lots in the center of towns near restaurants and shops.  Libraries would be another good location.  CCS users, of course, don't have to kill as much time as those of us restricted to J1772 L2.  Once movie theaters reopen they'd be an EXCELLENT option as well.

I did notice three of my favorite steak houses out on the east end ALL have J1772 Chargepoint stations in their parking lots.  That's SMART!

Yeah, I thought of that possibility, but still don't buy it because there are some great places where there are only Tesla Superchargers where there are no others of any type. Not even an AC outlet.  Such as Lake Topaz, NV on Hwy 95.

The other thing I think is stupid is all the Wal*Merts that don't have a J-1772. A J-1772,  albeit  slow, all EV's can use, even Tesla as well as all Zeros.

About 5 years ago a double L2 station was built at the back of the local Safeway grocery store, right next to their truck loading ramp. What a perfect location, in the middle of a truck maneuvering area and behind the store where it can't be seen.  ::) Needless to say, I can't recall anyone using that station. Still, it is not as bad as the multi-million dollar H2 station built next to the Sky Londa General Store, located in the Santa Cruz Mountains, across from Alice's Restaurant, which still doesn't appear to be in operation - however it does have a solid red warning light lit all the time.  :o  (If I was the owner of the General Store I think I would be a little worried about that.  ;)  )

This seems like the last hurdle before widespread adoption of EVs, well thought out placement of charging stations of the appropriate type. I’m not one to subscribe to conspiracy theories but I have to wonder if there’s some behind the scenes effort to make charging infrastructure fail. Between inefficient placement, poor maintenance of the DC chargers, uneven pricing structures and the need for umpteen different charging memberships, only those who believe in EVs will adopt them. The average consumer is going to look at the current charging infrastructure and determine it’s too much of a hassle and stick with gas.

You see the grouping effect like this everywhere: Walmarts opening next to gocery stores, Starbucks next to local coffee shops, even gas stations group up.

It makes less sense to open up business in an unproven area, better to set up shop where there's competition.

Everywhere I have seen ChaDeMo out here, it was CCS on the other side.

I've wondered how often EV's have had to be towed because of running out of charge--perhaps because of a charge station being down or not quite enough range.

Has it happened to anybody here?

Charging where there is nothing else to do is fine with me, as long as there is a cell connection. I always bring a small notebook computer with me with my Verizon Wireless portable hotspot, which is also often handy at some charge stations. I have seen some charge stations that could ONLY be activated with a web connection, especially in Truckee, CA.  IOW, I often get on-line while charging.

The red warning light usually means the battery backup is offline.

The J stations at the parks are grand - but only operate while the parks are open, which kinda makes it unreliable.  And what do you do if someone else gets to the one station first?

-Crissa

Oh, yeah!  The web start chargers in the bottom of a parking garage with no wifi.  Ugh!

Unfortunately the ChaDeMo stations at the rest area are JUST that.  I don't think I've ever seen them in use, either.

All they have to do is put more charge stations at gas stations. Make it a law that every gas station has to have at least one charge station. That would fix the problem fast, even if they all only have a J-1772, which are cheap to install and every service station has 240 VAC already. If I can do it at all three of my houses, I would think that wouldn't be such a major expense to a gas station. And it helps them get ready for what may be coming.

Interesting. I have never seen those type of chargers anywhere in CA or NV or anywhere else I have been. I see it's all Nissan Leafs and KIAs that have used them there.

At least there are two CCS chargers within ten miles of those two CHAdeMOs. And both of those locations also have CHAdeMO.

Are thsoe CHAdeMOs free out there?  The reason I ask is out here, the CHAdeMO is free to use for most, but we usually have to pay for the CCS. But there are exceptions, I have not had to pay at the ChargePoint CCS at the Harley Shops. At least not yet.

Since I can't use them, I've never bothered to check.  Plugshare USUALLY reports if a site is free or not but they don't say anything about those chargers other than the parking is free.

I totally agree. Installing J plugs at gas stations is fairly cheap, and tax deductible on top of that! I'm sure it'll happen with the larger energy companies like BP & Shell soon enough, they'll do it for the easy PR.

I would like to see DCFC take off here in North America but it's going to be a while until an EV that's not a Tesla goes mainstream. It's so weird, Tesla's an American company, and their success should have spurred loads of competition by now (in the states). We should have a shitload of EVs and charging options by now here! Instead, all the new EVs aren't available here because of "limited demand".

I like the idea of multiple CCS chargers close to each other. If one doesn't work you have other options close by. Last time I took my Eva to get inspected I tried a EA station and couldn't get any to work. So I had to charge on L2 for awhile to reach another CCS charger. Sure would have been nice to have other CCS chargers close by.

I wouldn't expect Shell to ever put DCFC in their gas stations ever. Shell bought out Greenlots and then shut down their systems claiming they weren't going to upgrade the cell modems to 4G. It leaves a lot of areas in NC, and TN without any kind of DCFC. If oil companies want to slow EV adoption they just have to buy out Electrify America and then shut down all of the chargers.

Or maybe Shell wants them at their stations instead of off in the boonies.

It's a terrible business decision, though.

I could see three close together, but near the summit on I-80 there are so many CCS chargers close together I have no idea what the count is. Almost every exit has a couple. No need to worry about a  CCS charger or two not working up there.

But I understand your point very well. Today, I charged at a Wal*Mart in or near Sacramento. I only saw one charger and nobody was using it, but the screen said "CCS NOT available" . But the CHAdeMO side said it was working. I rode around the parking lot and discovered they had two more chargers there and the first one I tried worked perfectly. But I had to use the advice I got from somebody here in this forum (I cannot now remember who that was). With some Electrify America Chargers, it is very important to NOT follow the instructions to "plug in first".  You use the Electrify America application to turn the charger  on (via internet) BEFORE connecting and then all is fine.

Up near the Summit on I-80, there are two Shell Gas Stations with several chargers each.  Four CCS chargers at Nyack Road Shell at Emigrant Gap and Two CCS charger at the Shell Gas Station at KingVale (Soda Springs). They also do CHAdeMO.

All these fast chargers are EV-GO, none are GreenLots.

BTW, you can see my Energica charging at the KingVale Station. I have used the other at Nyack Road also, but it looks like I forgot to check-in and post photos. But I see a check in from "17_Energica Eva" on 30, June 2020. That was NOT me, so I wonder who it was.

I guess someday I will have to go up there and charge. It's my new hobby to post info and photos of my bikes on Plugshare!

But lately, I have been taking Hwy 20 to get back to Reno, so I come out well past Nyack Road to get back on I-80. I-80 gets too boring after countless trips to Reno and back.

I am headed back to Reno in the morning. On Hwy 20, unless I change my mind just to go to Nyack Road for taking photos and checking in there!

I've taken Hwy 20 so many times lately, I am now considering taking I-80 tomorrow and stopping to charge at the Nyack Road Shell just so I can check-in and take photos of my Energica charging  for PlugShare. I have charged there so many times in the last year, that it really surprises me that I never bothered to check-in and post the photos. So I will do it tomorrow.

I will also check to see if the new chargers at the Cisco Grove Chevron Station are now activated. There, I have a check-in, and photos of my Zero SR, charging from the old J-1772 at 6.4 KW.  Also photos of the two new DC chargers and the new J-1772 charge station. So now there are two J-1772s at Cisco Grove. One old  Clipper Creek and the other new one is ChargePoint. But all the ChargePoints had no power the other day when I was there last, so they have not (then)  been activated. They have only been there for around a week. Perhaps they are now activated.

All the new stuff there is Chargepoint, including the two new CCS and CHAdeMO as shown here (https://www.plugshare.com/location/64737) in my photos. You have to look for the J-1772's (green)  there to see my photos, as PlugShare has no idea the DC fast chargers (should  be orange) there exist.

They also recently moved the CCS chargers by the Save-Mart, so I want to check that out as well. I just now rechecked. It looks like they added chargers there (https://www.plugshare.com/location/190889) , were not moved. But added to the front of the Save-Mart where the old ones were hidden behind the store.  I will have to check that out tomorrow as well.

Again, grouped together where not really needed.

Here is what I did and discovered today. On the way back from Auburn, I took as many side roads as possible next to I-80. I am getting to know the side roads very well and how to avoid most of I-80, yet staying close to it.  Such as Placer Hills Road, Rainbow Road, Big Bend, Donner Pass Road and many more.

So first I go to the Nyack Road and charge and get my photos for PlugShare (which I will post later tonight). Then, to Cisco Grove Chevron. The new Fast CCS-CHAdeMO and new J-1772 are not yet activated.

From there, I went to Truckee. They did NOT move the  EV-GO CCS Chargers behind the SaveMart. They are still there and still in operation.

But they added four new machines, all Electrify America, with eight  possible charge stations. Seven are CCS, one is CHAdeMO. These are at the CVS store right next to the SaveMart.

More chargers at another useless location where they are not needed. I have charged behind the Save Mart many times. I have NEVER seen anybody else use either one of them, and now there are seven more CCS charge stations there.  What is going on with I-80 between Truckee and the western foothills?

It's what I would like to see east and north of Reno. I cannot go far in either of those directions.

Perhaps those charging stations were funded by government grants and their locations selected and approved by government regulators - like the H2 station that I keep complaining about?  ::)

Yeah, I thought of that also, and such probably explains why CA is getting so many in areas where they are not at all needed.

In fact, in all trips to Auburn and back, I have yet to see anybody else at any of the CCS chargers at the same time as me. Not even one  other being used at the same time, so far.

Such grants are fine, if they add in "must be located at least 30 miles from all other chargers of the same type" or something like that.

Lately, I have been making two ten minute or so charging stops, each way. That takes less time than only one stop as the charge rate drops closer to a full charge. Each fast charge costs me less than $2.00. When I notice the charge rate drops below ten KW or so, I disconnect, unless I think I need every drop of added range. Not a problem in that area!

When I am charging, this type of stuff gets sent to my email (this is the final receipt):

Since it's a spot that gets snow and have big swings in traffic, maybe they're building up for peak holiday usage?

When it's snowing, an EV wants to huddle in at a charging station.

I've wondered if those chargers get more use in the winter when I never use them, which could explain the very large number of CCS chargers a few miles west of  Donner Summit to Truckee, CA.

But I also saw on Plugshare where the snow was so deep they could not even get to the chargers in Kingvale. Look at Dec 3 check-in at Kingvale  (https://www.plugshare.com/location/123513)for an example, also Jan 18 and other dates. And look at some of the photos.

But with that many charge stations around the I-80 summit, it has to be one's own fault if to let the SOC get that low.

It looks like they now  have another  new charger location in Truckee, CA  that I will have to check out. At 10069 Church Ave. All ChargePoint, both CCS and J-1772. The first check-in there was just yesterday. It opened on July 9.

As if they didn't already have more than enough CCS & J-1772 in Truckee. They now have EV-Go, Electrify America, ChargePoint and Green Lots in Truckee.

I just wish they would add them like that where they are really needed.

I don't think it is a question of installing them where they are really needed. That can be debated for decades. The question is can money be made by installing chargers at a certain location. We have all seen four-way intersections with a gas station on each corner. Does that intersection really need gas stations on each corner? No. Can money be made by having a gas station on each corner? Yes. I think this is the logic that is being followed with charging stations in the areas you describe. Also it is easy to say right now given the number of EVs on the road that a charging station isn't needed at a certain location. But as the number of EVs on the roads grow so will the need to have more charging stations. If charging station owners get ahead of the demand for charging it will help EV adoption.

The problem is that there cannot be more EVs in some areas, because they cannot now get there. More charge stations  will bring more EVs out there, as well as an  increase in  sales of EVs.

The locations of EV charge stations is more important than the range of EVs, IMO.

Today, I took a ride around Lake Tahoe and checked out several charge locations.  At the Chase Bank in Zephyr Cove, they have a Tesla destination charger that is in a really nice area with a picnic table in the shade trees behind the bank.

Here are some photos of the trip including a CCS charge in Tahoe City, CA.

I already checked-in at PlucgShare at these locations with photos.

There are many more I need to check out on my next trip around the lake.

To go around the lake took around 25% of my charge, starting with a full charge at the lake. Good range because of slow speed limits and some traffic just north of Incline Village, NV. I went around the lake counter Clockwise starting from the  Mt Rose Hwy (hwy 431).

Here are some photos of today's ride:

Climbing a mountain range takes a lot of power.  Of course, charging to 100 at the top of a mountain range is dumb; you'll wear brake pads on the way down since regen is disabled at high state of charge!

I discovered this charge station does NOT exist. 10069 Church in Truckee, CA is a house with no chargers around, other than the ones already listed at  9932 Donner Pass Road,  one block away.

Since they are shown as so close together on Plugshare, some people do a "check-in" for Church when they are really on Donner Pass Road (a block away--a very short walking distance). I left a note on PlugShare saying "address is incorrect" for 10069 Church.

I see on Plugshare that they just added another CCS / CHAdeMO charge station where NOT needed on I-80.

The East Bound Donner Summit Rest Area.

This must be a CA thing to have countless chargers where they are not needed and none where they are needed. Still no J1772 there.

IMO, they should add a J1772 at every fast charge station. The 240VAC  is already there, so why not? At least have a 240 VAC outlet!

I could name places all day where we need charge stations, even on I-80, just not in CA. How about LoveLock, NV for an example?

Between here in Auburn, CA and my main Reno home, there are now 13 different exits where I can DC fast (24KW) charge in that 99.0 miles (160 KM). But only a few J1772 stations--and those can charge ALL EVs, albeit slow at 6.6 to 7.7 KW max AC capacity.

I really only need one location. The one at Cisco Grove is my favorite, right in the middle and near the summit and can also be used for taking Hwy 20. And there are three J-1772 ports there, two at 6.6 KW and the other at 7.680 KW (32 amps at 240 VAC). The new ChargePoints are LOWER capacity then the old Clipper Creek behind the gas station. But the two CP's are NOT split so both ports can be used and get the full 13.2 KW (also pay double). The old Clipper Creek is a flat  fee of $2.00 and is a better deal in every way, especially when under the 7.680  (32 amp) rating.

Who makes these stupid decisions of  where to put the new charge stations?

I guess they go where they think the money is, Don. And in the corporate world that would be following the herd and placing your chargers where everyone else has one.   ::)  Plus, it could also be that charging stations are cheap compared with providing the necessary new electrical infrastructure out in the boondocks. I bet charging station companies are just not willing to invest in new infrastructure unless there is already a demonstrated demand for the service. It is a chicken and the egg thing and a lot of companies don't like to take chances nowadays and are willing to invest in old live chickens and not fresh eggs that may or may not hatch.  ;)

Of the countless times I have DC charged between here and Reno, I have yet to see another person use a CCS charge station while I was there--at any of them.

I have seen others use a J-1772 station, however, but perhaps because they are there longer charging and there are not nearly as many J stations as DCFC on I-80. But there are a few more of those too, than  last year.

More  DC fast charge stations on that part of I-80 are unnecessary, at least for now. IMO, if they would spread them out better, there would be a lot more EVs on the road these days.

BTW, I was at the free  J1772 charge station at the Colfax Train Station (https://www.plugshare.com/location/7224) the other day. It looks like somebody vandalized it and it's now out of service.  The J1772 plug looks like it was deliberately destroyed. You can see the damage in the photo I took there., if you take a good look at the plug on the bottom of the photo.

And I do not expect it to ever  be fixed. Who will pay to fix it when it is free? And perhaps just to be vandalized again. At least now they have another J station hidden behind this restaurant (https://www.plugshare.com/location/217070) only a mile or so away.

Don, they have to build to the peak hour use ever, not the median use whenever you zip through.  Are you ever there when it's snowpacked?  They'd need chargers for all the cars unable to continue.

I have wondered the same. Perhaps those CCS chargers get a lot more use in the winter after the ski season starts. And that is when I will NOT be riding or even looking at charge stations.  And if I take my Tesla, I can do a round trip on a home charge. I can easily go  between here and Reno and back again &  have charge left over (it sure would be nice if electric motorcycles could do that!). But I also can charge at either place.  Besides that, even if I did need to charge on the road I would not be using any of those CCS / CHAdeMO or J1772's.

I often see Teslas charging at the Superchargers. But that is the most common electric car these days.
