Title: powertank ineligible for connection?

I've not seen this come up before. I checked the unofficial manual and both this entry and the "power decay too steep, restarting sevcon" do not have any info.

01940     05/01/2020 07:37:45   Powertank voltage too high and monolith ineligible for connection. Setting powertank as ineligible for connecton.

 02103     05/02/2020 13:23:47   Precharge Decay Too Steep. Restarting Sevcon.

There are about a dozen instances of each. 2015 18.0 SR, and I use 6.6kW (really more like 5.5?) of diginows. can post logs too.

What are you doing with the bike at the time?

Someone else had a voltage mismatch and it was a sign one of the battery packs (their power tank or charge tank) was failing.

I will assume that you left the motorcycle at a low  charging state for a long period of time (by the new charging/storage theory,  and that may be ok with the SRF and SRS, because they have a new BMS) and now the cells are out of ballance and the main pack and the Power tank can't get to the same voltage,  so the BMS won't connect them in parallel.  They will, probably,  have to be individualy charged and balanced  to the same voltage,  so they can safely be reconnected in parallel. Just my 2 cents.

I saw reports, that on the older models, after they went with "let it stay over the winter at SOC 60%" when charging back to 100%, the cells inbalance made the battery pack to appear that it had lost capacity, and will take a few discharge/charge cycles until they got balanced back. In your case it's going to be a little more tricky because of the Power tank.

What version controller do you have for your diginows? Older models did not reduce charge current on powertank bikes and may have had some issues with interpack balancing.

No I did not let it sit almost at all. I use my SR and DS for work, and regularly run through full duty cycles. Sometimes I get it down to less than 20%, but I immediately plug it in when I get home and leave it for up to several hours past 100% so it can balance. I think I have the 2.5 controller, As the Bluetooth terminal app says SC- 2.5.

Also what are your charging values set for charging in the chargers? ( maximum voltage especially). Try a command  with a 1000W of charging power,  and a maximum voltage of 114.5V to give the BMS a better chance for balancing in case that one of the packs is out of balance. But, again,  3mV it's a very good balance.

On my 2018S with PT, I also see 115 volts at 100% SOC. My balance voltages alternate between 3mV and 5mV, so it would appear that the app is checking at least three separate battery modules.  One of them is likely the Power Tank.   ???

Unfortunate, I have no experience with the Power Tank, but 3mV and 5mV are only two values, so two batteries: main pack and Power Tank.

And both my main battery and PT are brand new, they got replaced under warranty in late January.

Unfortunate, I have no experience with the Power Tank, but 3mV and 5mV are only two values, so two batteries: main pack and Power Tank.

I also see 4mV, but I just didn't mention it, since it was between 3 and 5mV.   ;)

I am going to do the zero-recommended 3x charge to 100% and discharge as close as possible to 0%. See if the balance changes in the logs to “allow” the power tank.

Recently, I charged my Zero to 100% SOC and left the charger connected for several hours my mistake.  I then recalled that I needed to pull the plug to cut off the charger (on my bike the green charging light and dash display stays on and the charger pulls about 4 watts until unplugged). After disconnecting the charger, I turned on the ignition and checked the app. That was when it showed 115 volts and balancing that alternated from 3mV to 4mV to 5mV. So I assume that it was providing the voltage balance by checking the two permanent battery modules and also the Power Tank.  But if anyone has any other explanation, I am "all ears".   ;)

I wish the Zero app would reveal the distinction between the main powerpack and the Power Tank in any way, whatsoever.

The cel imbalance reading is unclear to me whether it is showing for the powerpack, the Power Tank, or the maximum value read from both.

And what it will not show is a voltage difference between the powerpack and the Power Tank, which is what causes the above sequence of messages.

Try to determine the voltages of each battery via the MBB console or the logs. If they're more than 3V (I think) different, the contactor of the lower one will not shut to protect from inrush.

For what it's worth, "precharge decay too steep" could be a real/separate concern. Precharge comes from the BMS onto the main bus to put enough voltage into the motor controller's capacitor banks to avoid significant current outrush. Decay happens once precharge ends, and is measured for safety against there being an issue in the controller or on the main bus. I don't know how to read more into that, but there's what I understand from a first pass.

I generally recommend a slow (1-3kW) charge to 100%. The batteries need a slow charge in order to avoid transients as the lower battery reaches the voltage of the other battery, to give it a safe window in which to close its contactor and get the batteries balanced.

Yes I will run it to 0% and only charge with one delta q. See what that does to it. I’ve been preferring my DS lately due to the Slightly more upright position. I’m also thinking I should start a case with zero HQ.
