bad drivers and close calls on my Zero
« on: March 09, 2020, 04:52:04 AM »

A couple clips of some close calls I've had on my Zero since owning it.

I must admit I'm also often tempted to take my FX 15-20 over the limit (worded not to admit anything!) because it's so easy and so non-disruptive and fun.

It should be possible to anticipate most incidents of this type and be accommodating to other road users, bearing in mind that some granny or distracted mother or lost driver isn't going to have very good reactions compared to yours. It's their responsibility to look, but you're like a silent rocket appearing out of nowhere and nobody is perfect.

You have good focus, but also note that the most horrible of accidents are usually the result of multiple factors coinciding. So while you easily avoid a narrow miss, it is when something else unexpected happens during the time your attention is occupied that you get T-boned and such. Also, when a car is behaving erratically, hold back to see what foolish move they are about make (sudden U-turn or left turn is common).

So if you're getting more than one close call a year, you should chill (just a little) because of statistics, partly because you can't change the whole world, and partly because it's better to be alive than correct.

Congratulations on your invention of an invisibility cloak.  The army needs your stealth bike.

Do you have a strobe button for your headlight or just a really quick finger?

May I share this video with another Youtube motorcycle instructor?

Your ability to slow and dodge made all of these into non-events, but they're things to watch out for!

I changed out the 7 OEM incandescent bulbs on my 16 DSR as well as installing 17 more LED’s (including a AdMore light bar) for a total of 24 (not including the stock running/stop led.
This increases my appearance 360°
I wear HiVis one-piece riding suit as will as a HiVis helmet.

I realize there will be some motorists that still won’t see me or worse see me but not yield to my right of way but at least most will see me & react accordingly.
Still have to act as if I’m not visible tho.......

;D It sure feels like I have that cloak on sometimes, that's funny!

It seems that too many think that these bikes are too quiet, but the real issue is likely that the modern car is too well soundproofed.  With the radio going, even a firetruck with sirens blaring can sneak up on most car drivers.

Potty mouth drives way to fast. I question who the bad driver is here. Speed for conditions? No just speed. You keep pulling that speed handle and you're gonna hit the jackpot. You're gonna die. All the blinky lights won't save your life. Even an ambulance driver has to drive defensively. Which means with 18 LED strobes flashing in all directions and a 200 watt siren blaring in yelp mode, still stopping at an intersection because someone just never noticed you were there. Watching the video, three letters come to mind, DOA.

I urge anyone who hasn't figured it all out yet to go and watch DanDanTheFireman on Youtube and drink deep of the cold well of epiphany.

Cas :)

Even if you have, DanDan's videos are helpful analysis of situations that we hopefully never get to see, reminds us why defensive positions on the road are so important to motorcycle riding.
