Dropped my SR today
« on: March 06, 2020, 12:19:50 PM »

When I came home, I wanted to park the bike outside in front of my garage as I was probably going to use it again later in the day. So I get here, and I start to put down the side stand and the bike starts to fall over and I have no idea why or what caused it. But there was no stopping it.

I never knew my 2017 SR (with Pwr Tank)  was so heavy. Sometimes those videos about how to pick up a fallen bike only works in perfect conditions such as level ground and a bike that doesn't fall all that flat. Anyway, I could not budge my SR using the correct procedures yet I am certain I could pick up that Harley as easily as she could in that video. In the real world, things are often different.

Anyway, nobody around to help me so here is what I did, since it was right in front of my garage.

I can't exactly recognize what 'thing' it is you used for getting it up again ...
You were successful however.

I never knew my SR/F (with Pwr Tank)  was so heavy.

SR/F .... Wishful writing?  ;)

It was an HFT hydraulic lift. Has a foot pump to lift up the table.

Nope, I didn't really care for the SR/F. In fact, a test ride on the Zero SR/F is what caused me to buy the Energica.

I am not sure what I was thinking, (or I wasn't thinking!) but I just now edited that out in my OP.  I am glad you pointed that out. Thanks.

All your stuff on it and those batteries up high prolly is what did it.

Yeah, I noticed how top heavy my SR is today. I never expected it to be that difficult to get up. Other than that, it seems like a light bike. At least while I am riding it.

No can't clearly see it either on the picture. Can you drop it again and film it this time?  8)

No just kidding, thanks for sharing. I've only picked up BMW boxers so far and these also don't go flat thanks to their engine configuration. They do way a bit more I would think.

First time I dropped the DSR with charge tank was on a sandy road. No damage, just my ego :P Since I have the luggage rack I have a strong handhold and was able to push the bike upright again using the 'back-against-the-bike' method. There are several YouTube entries showing this method, works pretty well on flat surface.

I was able to get my SR/F up last summer after it rolled of the stand on a incline when I was parking it (slow motion drop, first week of ownership).  I used my back and legs, and the front break clamp (parking brake) to keep it from rolling while I stood it up.  I'm glad you got it up!  I assume no damage (there was none on my SR/F).

I dropped my 2014 S with PT once when I went to put my foot down at a stop light and found that the pavement was lower than I had expected due to the drainage slope of the pavement.  I got off and tried to pick the Zero up, but it was leaning slightly over more than 90 degrees and I couldn't budge it.  That 42 pound Power Tank is sure heavy.  Anyway, I was blocking a lane of traffic, so the woman directly behind me got out of her SUV and helped me pick up my Zero so that we could both move on.  I sure was glad that I was holding up traffic then.   :)

The only damage during that tip-over was a broken rider's foot peg and a scratched handle bar end.  I replaced the foot peg when I got home with the passenger peg and painted the scratches on the bar end cap.

A handy tool to have around if you ever drop your bike and you are alone, is the MotoBikeJack.  It allows you to easily jack up your motorcycle of any size if it is laying on its side. I bought one and I can verify that it works, having dropped my new Zero once in my garage when I didn't deploy the side stand fully forward and the bike fell over. It fits into a provided 15" long canvas sack, but it is kind of heavy and the quality of the components are just so-so. But it does work.

That was the very first thing I tried. My SR was down too low and flat  to use that method.

I agree with what it says here. Just  after the words "think about it".

I learned that the hard way yesterday.

When my bike was inverted, I resorted to the first method:

I had to put both knees down, arms stiff under it, but the I had to stop and grab the brake lest it roll away.  I was unable to lock the front forks 'cause of how it was turned.

It would have been much harder with a power tank on it!

That was good info, thanks!  However, the single person method would not have worked with my bike yesterday. Down flat, handlebars touching the pavement as shown in my photos. No place to grab, could not even get hands down there anyway. If it were not for my hydraulic lift, my bike would still be down in front of my garage!

Anyway, no damage at all from the fall. I just now  came back from a 15 mile ride on it.

Not too much of an issue for my Zero FX, but can you imagine a Energica at 621 Plus pounds. :(
