SRF phantom drain
« on: February 21, 2020, 12:43:37 AM »

Hello,

not sure if this has been talked about before.
But can anybody confirm if the SRF's battery drops over time, if left unplugged for long periods.
I would be storing the bike in a storage unit, for potentially 3-6 months at the time. Am I likely to find the battery down to 0%, 6 month later if originally left at 50%?
Thx for the feedback

I would imagine there are long term storage instructions in the user manual, there are for the previous models. Those would enter a hibernation mode after not being turned on for an extended period.

My SR/F drops about 2 to 3% per week. Probably due to the "Effortless Connection" module and the 12V battery.

So storing it for 6 months (26 weeks) at 50% is not advisable. But if you store it at 70% (which is fine) and check after a month (to determine the actual drain) and then again after 3 months it should be fine.

Yes, off course there are instructions I am sure. And I would imagine the bike gets into an hibernation mode.
But regardless, I have a Tesla, and I remember that despite all that, in the past at least, the car used to go down 1-2% per night!! It was a real issue.
I am trying to find out if anybody has left his Zero SRF in storage for a long time, and noticed a drop in battery charge.

I'm not sure any of us have had the SR/F long enough to test this! Here is Zero's manual portion for SR/F storage:

Parking and Long Term Storage• Whenever you plan on not riding or storing your motorcycle for extended periods of time (more than 30 days), it is recommended that you charge the power pack to approximately 60% state of charge (SoC) and then leave the charger disconnected.• If the key switch has not been in the ON position within the last 30 days, the Battery Management System (BMS) will activate long term storage mode which will automatically drain the power pack to 60% SoC. If the motorcycle disconnected to the charger while in long term storage mode, the maximum SoC will be limited to 60%.• The power pack will discharge extremely slowly over time.Check the SoC at least monthly and charge it back up to 60%if it has dropped below 30%.• To prolong the life of your power pack you should store your motorcycle in a cool area. Storing your motorcycle in a hot area will cause your power pack’s life to be shortened. The recommended storage temperature is -4°F (-20°C) to 95°F(35°C).• When you’re ready to take your motorcycle out of storage to ride it again, turn the key switch to the ON position and back to OFF to exit long term storage mode. Charge for at least 24 hours to ensure optimal cell balance is restored.

This makes it seem unlikely that it would drop below 30%...I don't understand the part about long term storage mode though. After 30 days, it will activate long term storage (LTS) mode. But check it monthly to make sure it has not dropped below 30%. That resets the LTS clock?

in any case, I have not experienced anything close to 1-2% drop overnight with either of my Zeros and they are both almost 5 years old.

Perhaps you can check the SoC without keying the bike on, I know with previous models they had indicator lights under a cover on the front of the battery (behind the front wheel). Or use a multimeter to measure the voltage.

Regarding what are parasitic loads on the SR/F, the cellular connectivity module (that's the part name) can come on from time to time, and I believe the bike activates DC-DC converter occasionally to maintain the 12V battery charge state (unless you pull B+ and B- fuses, in which case the 12V battery becomes your responsibility).

The BMS by comparison should be an extremely minor load, similar to the drain we see on S/DS/FX family bikes over long storage periods.

I'm not sure any of us have had the SR/F long enough to test this! Here is Zero's manual portion for SR/F storage:

I've owned the SR/F since August last year and I have not ridden it since oktober. Every week or so I key the bike on to see the SOC (and feast my eyes on the gorgeous dash  8) ). That how I noticed the 2 - 3 % drop a week. I have not let it hibernate yet. I've charged it a couple of times from 55% to 65% to replenish it to the ideal storage SOC (60%)

The connectivity module does drain the battery and indeed the bike sometimes switches on the DCDC converter for the 12V battery. But the strange thing is that the remote app (which uses the connectivity module) does NOT show the drop in SOC. It stays on the last reading when the bike was last keyed on (or charging). It is not until you key on the bike that the SOC gets updated in the remote function of the app.

I also have it since august but have been riding it all the time so I have no clue what happens if you let it sit. Other than what instructions say about the automated discharge to 60% after 1 month of not using it.

Hey Hans2183, Did you have any more CEL/errors since your bike was returned?

Hey Hans2183, Did you have any more CEL/errors since your bike was returned?

Yes unfortunately I saw the CEL light again quickly after having my bike returned.

When it was back I had 2 rides on wet roads (not actually raining) that went perfect. But then the 3rd day it was lightly raining and the CEL returned on the dash while riding. Difference was that I could just charge it and power it back up without issues this time. So I was never really stranded. The light goes out after like 3 or 4 ignition switches without the error occurring.

The week after that I had it show once more in very very wet riding. Like extremely heavy rain. Followed by a few dry rides and the error went away again.

Last week ended in full on raining again. Also this morning lots of rain. But no errors came on. So I have no clue what caused it the previous times.

I reported it to the dealer and he asked me to sent a picture, which I did. Haven't heard from them since then.
