some uh-ohs on a new-to-me 2015 SR
« on: February 05, 2020, 04:50:50 AM »

Just picked up this SR last week. Rides AMAZINGLY, even smoother than my 16 DS. Today, however, I ran home to check on my puppy. On the ride back, i noticed my red triangle flashing in 2 pulses.....bom bom.....bom bom....I did not feel any discharge limiting or any difference in performance. About halfway back to work, I heard a loud click like i had just plugged it in to charge. The light stopped flashing at that point. Below are the MBB logs from today. Entry 07702, 07816, and 07698 and 99 are what I think may be issues.

(I have a 2015 SR)
I have a lot of these in my logs; that seems not  to create any problems for me:
 02711     07/14/2019 00:17:38   Low Chassis Isolation      98 KOhms to cell 5
 02712     07/14/2019 01:22:47   Low Chassis Isolation      99 KOhms to cell 5
 02713     07/14/2019 03:14:33   Low Chassis Isolation      100 KOhms to cell 4
 02714     07/14/2019 05:32:11   Low Chassis Isolation      100 KOhms to cell 3
 02715     07/14/2019 11:13:21   Low Chassis Isolation      100 KOhms to cell 5
 02716     07/14/2019 13:34:28   Low Chassis Isolation      98 KOhms to cell 4
 02717     07/14/2019 14:05:41   Low Chassis Isolation      99 KOhms to cell 4
The KOhms values are higher than yours however. No clue if that means anything.

I also have LOADS of this one in my log:
 00572     05/13/2019 13:16:12   CAN1 ACK error. count=1

On this one:
red triangle flashing in 2 pulses.....bom bom.....bom bom...
According to the manual that would be: Self-Test Failed     Contact Zero or your dealer.

Does it flash anything after key-on (turning the key to switch on the bike)? Any error codes appearing on start-up?

Nothing flash on key on, error codes say 25, 44, 45. 44/45 are to be expected, but that contractor open warning does concern me.

I'm far from an expert on logs but from my basic understanding the battery discharge is being limited and it seems to be from a cell imbalance, possibly exacerbated by a low state of charge. Stick it on charge and leave it for a while once it reaches 100% so it can balance the cells, you can check the activity through the app on your phone (wait for the watts and amps to drop to 0). The app will also tell you the maximum voltage difference between the cells, under 10mV is usually good. For reference the logs say your battery has a 369mV difference at one point and that will only get worse under load and as the charge decreases, and it also says the maximum allowable difference is 500mV.

These logs indicate the contactor on your powertank is not closing, because the voltage differential between the monolith and the powertank is too high. Charging the bike to full will bring the two battery voltage close enough to work. You can see it in the logs where it says Module 1 Not Connected on 7807.

Riding the bike hard can cause the batteries to drain at different rates, and used to cause people to get stranded at your destination if the powertank voltage is higher than the monolith. Zero put out a firmware fix for it, which I think you have, since your bike is running solely off the monolith in your logs. Again, the fix is charging to full so the batteries equalize. If you have time, once you arrive at your destination, you can also leave the bike keyed on for a couple minutes, and the different battery voltages will equalize.

Long term, if your battery warranty is still good, I'd consider getting Zero to evaluate battery health and determine whether you qualify for a replacement. That'll fix this and get you more range.

Isolation messages are fairly common and can indicate nothing, especially on older bikes.

Update:

Zero reviewed the logs after I dropped it at the dealer. The power tank is toast (they did not elaborate on why). Apparently this caused the monolith to go way out of spec on cell balance. Thankfully they are replacing both under warranty. I was a little concerned about getting denied due to the diginows harming the battery, but that was unwarranted. So thankful I caught this before the timer went out! Really happy with the service.

Care to elaborate on this? "I was a little concerned about getting denied due to the diginows harming the battery, but that was unwarranted."
It's news to me that the DigiNow chargers harm the battery...?

Lucky you - for a 2015 you should be out of warranty time. Please share the name of your dealer, useful to share good dealers names with the community !

Warranty starts when it leaves the dealer, not the factory.

Sorry y'all, didn't see these responses!

@motorrad36

It's news to me that the DigiNow chargers harm the battery...?

Zero has stated that if they can prove that aftermarket (specifically equipment zero does not offer, so Delta-Qs are not considered aftermarket) chargers are the root cause of a component or a monolith going bad/out of balance, they will not replace under warranty. Not a certainty that the diginows cause these issues, but if memory serves zero has also stated they would not warranty a battery that had been charging at/over 1C, which is possible with enough diginows.

Lucky you - for a 2015 you should be out of warranty time. Please share the name of your dealer, useful to share good dealers names with the community !

It was purchased in December of 2015, and the warranty goes until the date of initial purchase thankfully! Just a few more months and I would've been SOL. The new battery now has a 1 year warranty from date of install. So technically I have until March of 2021. But either way the dealer I went to was Elk Grove Power Sports in...well, Elk Grove lol.
