It's certainly more expensive to build a controller capable of handling more current.

There are plenty available off the shelf, but if you need a custom one, yes.

...And still literally more expensive when it deals with more current and/or voltage.

His point wasn't even that it wouldn't be more expensive but rather that it wouldn't be more complex. Even if it is more expensive it needs to be by a significant amount to warrant the cost of adding a gearbox to the bike.

If the gearbox is the same one as in their Supernex bike, it's a clutchless shifting and actually sounds pretty cool in their video. I'm looking forward to seeing their bikes on the road. Kymco makes good bikes.
