Is this a good deal on this DSR?
« on: September 25, 2019, 10:38:51 PM »

Hello folks,
I just joined this forum but I"ve been lurking for a couple of months.  I am looking to buy my first electric motorcycle.  I've been riding naked bikes and scooters for about 10 years now and own a few bikes.  I'm a big believer in electric vehicles and hope to get a Model 3 someday when used prices are reasonable.  In the meantime, I'd love to commute and run about locally on an electric bike. I currently use a Piaggio BV350 for this and it is perfect for my use, other than it requires gas and ICE maintenance. Since nobody makes a similar performance mid-size electric scooter yet (the C-Evolution is nice but too big for around town - I have a C650GT for longer trips), I am looking at used Zeroes, preferably 2016 and newer.

I've tested an FXS, S, SR, and DSR, and loved them all.  Any of them would work.  A used 2016/2017 FXS would be the cheapest but there's a local, one owner, 2017 DSR with charge tank that is particularly nice and is tempting me, although it's a little more than I had planned on spending.  It has 14K miles, heated grips, windscreen, Givi top case, crash bars, Scorpion Trail tires (original tires with 2K miles come with it) and all bulbs replaced with LED.  It's pretty much decked out exactly how I'd want and the owner has about $21K invested in it.  I can get it for $11K, maybe a few hundred less.  This is also in the SF bay area, so I don't know how that affects prices.  Is this a good deal?

Thanks in advance!

Well, it seems to be a dealer.

There were six or so on the market at the end of August, now that's the only used one listed in the area.  Looking nationally, I can't find any with batteries that large in the $10K range.

Since there's none others on the market, I really can't say.  It's about $2K more than GrandPrix was asking for theirs a month ago - but theirs was in the ugly redwood color and had no add-ons or fancy tires.

If they're selling that well that all the used ones sold, then it's a sellers' market.  On the other hand, it doesn't look like they're gouging.  You won't get that battery size in that price new.  I'd make sure to test it fully and maybe get them to guarantee the battery for a couple days at least so you can test it.

Electric Terry was on the September 9th Motorcycles & Misfits podcast taking about prices for used electric motorcycles. This seems like a fair to good deal.

Well, it seems to be a dealer.

Coincidentally, there is a nearby dealer selling a similar bike - 2017 DSR with charge tank - for the same asking price, but missing some niceties like heated grips, windscreen, and LED lights.  The one I'm looking at is being sold by the original owner and has all the service documentation.  It looks practically brand new and is super clean.

That's what I paid for my 2017 dsr (no charge tank) a year ago, and it didn't have any of that stuff, but my bike only had 1200 miles on it. The charge tank itself is a $2400 option. I think thats a hell of a deal. Even if it's more than you need, sometimes it's hard to pass up a good deal.
Btw, I have mine for sale for $9500, and it only has a givi topbox.

I noticed the dsr you were looking at on eBay is gone now. Did you buy it?

The bike I’m looking at is on the local craigslist and is still available. I went and looked at it again today. I like it and am close to pulling the trigger. My main concern is the seat height of the DSR.  It is manageable, but I keep thinking the SR is a better fit for me (30” inseam). On the other hand, I prefer the ergonomics and looks of the DSR, and I love the add ons and condition of this bike.  I had a Moto Guzzi Stelvio that I ultimately sold because it was a tad too high, but was also 150lbs heavier than the DSR and about an inch higher.  I had a hard time paddling that bike around unless the terrain was flat.  The DSR is similar in seat height and weight to my Buell XB12SS, maybe a touch higher. I never had any issues with my Buell.

So, basically, still cogitating on getting this fine example, or hold out for an SR.

The guy also had the bike on ebay. It was exactly the same as you described it. Maybe  the listing ended without selling it. I was thinking about putting mine on ebay, but they get $200 if I sell it and $77 if I dont. Craigslist is still free.
Sounds like the sr might be a better fit for you.

Sounds like a good deal. I have a 2013 FX ( converted to FXs ) 2014 S ( as modded for speed as it can be ) and a 2016 SR
with Race program installed. I was going to sell the FXs when I got the SR but it was so much fun to ride that I kept it.
You will find that you want to ride the electric more and more. I have a Suzuki SV that I kept for long distance rides but, it
only comes out now to make sure that everything is okay. The FX and FXs are both going to be more fun, but, with about
half the range. I don't think that  you can go wrong with this one.

Don't forget you can do the "super-moto" mod and drop the 19" front wheel to the 17" SR wheel. might help just a bit with the height. I have the '16 DS and i'm just over 6ft, and still want to have it a bit lower. This is something I really want to do, but have not yet bit the bullet on the new front wheel.

Thanks, tmdaly!  That could be interesting.  Is it just a wheel/tire swap or are there any other components, like brakes, that need to be swapped?

I looked at a 2018 SR with charge tank.  I do like the seat height on this bike, but I like everything else better on the DSR.

Its just a new wheel and tire, there is a post about it on the unofficial guide. The brakes are the same, but make sure you get the same model year, or you might risk the same mistake I made- buying rims for a year that did not have ABS. Otherwise its a simple plug and play swap! i'm hoping to do mine soon, but that $500 price tag is just not in the cards for a little while longer.

To give an update, I just bought this DSR with charge tank, so now I am finally an EM and Zero owner!  I"m quite excited!  I think the height will be fine for me.
