Zero’s 2020 Lineup Posted: Thoughts?
« on: September 19, 2019, 05:35:47 AM »

Didn’t know if I should bother, w/ so many carryovers, and one “new” model.. But there’s at least an appearance package and some new luggage on the adventure line and another color/graffix option available for the FX(S), in addition to the SR/F flagship which has already proven more than chat-worthy (RIDE IT, if you haven’t tested one yet.)

Still, no full-faired anything offered, nor SR/F-tech trickled down quite yet... https://www.zeromotorcycles.com/zero-ds/

Definitely NOT a fan of their dropping the 14.4 kWh option for the S or DS models, that's for sure...

I hadn't seen that they dropped that option, but they did.
I would have dropped the 7.2 option, then drop the price of the "R" models and then drop the "R" so the current SR and DSR were just the base S and DS.  Cheaper insurance.  If it can't go 150MPH it shouldn't be an "R".
Four bike models FX FXS DS and S from the non SRF models would cover the market for the lower priced but still very good bike options.

I see those low end models just sit and sit at dealers.  It's a niche of a niche of a niche and I shudder to think how much of a loss resale would be.  Sometimes you have to save people by taking away bad choices.

I hope the X bikes get big upgrades next.

Hmmm, I see what you guys are saying. Moto7575 started a thread in the Zero section and some members quickly came up w/ pretty sound logic behind the shifting numbers. 2020 FXS models are out !

Wait a minute!!  What's up with this?  According to Electric Motorcycle News, European riders will still be able to get the 14.4 kWh S and DS models.  Only we Americans are getting screwed!  What's up with that??

As long as they're still building them, I see no reason why they can't build them for the US if someone wants one and doesn't want to pay the $3,000.00 premium for the "R" models.  I don't know about you, but 80 lbs/ft of torque for a bike that weighs just over 400 lbs is plenty of fun; 116 lbs/ft of torque is NOT worth $3,000.00 (and the increased insurance costs) to me.

I found it curious that the S and DS models are only available in the U.S. with a 7.2 kWh battery, while in Europe you can buy one with a 7.2, 11, or 14.4 kWh battery pack. I wonder why you can't have a similar choice in the U.S., especially as these bikes seem to be usually made to order after the customer puts down a deposit with a retail dealer?  ???

Here is a link to Zero's press release describing the U.S. and EU options:

Technically a 7.2kW + 3.6kW PT is still a 11kW, except no charge tank and a different weight distribution.
But a 11kW + charge tank with the same power/torque as the ZF 13/14.4 S would be awesome! That will be a ~90 minutes full charge maybe.

Zero told me you can order stuff from other model lines and swap it in if it fits.  So I assume this new lineup is just a streamlining since they're no longer making most bikes to order.

Heck, my neighbor who works for them has a 2007 FX with 2019 electronics in it o-o

That's right! @Cortez has been doing that very same thing for years. If I understand it right straight from Hollywood Electrics, when you go from *that* old an ElMoto (Most models weren't even called the same thing back then.), to updated tech of the past few yrs, you also have to swap out wiring the harness, in addition to batts, BMS, controller, etc. So... it's A LOT to take on! Best stick w/ the saddlebags, racks, suspension and such. ;) Even *if* Zero does start selling modular components. :wishfulthinking:

Those are Givi Dolomiti side and top cases.

I like the color options. These are the best color scheme plastics I’ve ever seen on Zero’s product line.

The S model blue is my favorite; I’d get those for my DSR if it were still in one piece.

I also do not understand the reduction in S/DS configurations. S and DS models are cheaper to insure than SR/DSR models, so a maximized battery there is going to appeal to a market segment.

There’s not much to say, obviously, until they reveal literally anything new. We have rumors of a new accessories website, and there are reasonably good guesses that the SR/F will have some kind of sibling model, but nothing else.

I will say that the SR/F was clearly a relabeled 2019 model, especially compared to the competitors’ 2020 models that didn’t get delivered yet this year. Zero managed to ship new platform bikes better than anyone else.

I see very few differences. I would have expected more torque / battery for the FXS model, but if they prefer focusing on what is working where it is working (cf US/EU models difference and reduction of the # of model since the volumes are still very small), doing one real model change per year and work on quality & customer satisfaction instead it is fine for me. This is a sign they reach maturity - i will just wait 2/3 years before I change my FXS.
