Zero Service
« on: July 31, 2019, 12:18:30 AM »

Since I purchased my two Zero motorcycles in year 2017, I have been trying to get the firmware updates. Never had the first one that is required to be done at the dealer.

I just now came back from Euro-Cycles here in Reno, who sells the Zeros. They still do not have the firmware for my bikes. It's kinda ridiculous,  IMO.

But now I know how they came up with the name Zero. Zero service.

Do others here have the same problems getting basic service done on a Zero? Or is it just here in Reno?

The dealers are supposed to have the tools and software to upgrade firmware on any bike. I've never had that problem. It sounds like your Reno dealer is either misinformed or not interested in doing it. I'd consider reaching out to Zero at some point and asking them to follow up with your dealer about the case.

When my 2018 S bike was given its 600-mile service at SF Moto, I was told by the servicing technician that he "commissioned" the motor and downloaded the latest firmware update by connecting to the Zero factory website.  I assume that Zero has some sort of technical section just for franchised dealers.   ???

The one and only time my 2014 S had its firmware updated, the Zero technician that worked to get the bike running with a Power Tank at the defunct dealership in Daly City, did so by connecting the bike's computer to the factory via the internet.

That all makes sense. Perhaps the Reno shop here either doesn't have access to the website  or perhaps  does but  doesn't even know how to access it. I have no idea what the real problem is here.

It's a very large shop, but  seems to have lots of problems keeping mechanics and such. I doubt if anybody there now has even worked on a Zero before.

I bet you need both a special connector of some sort along with a unique dealership code to access the secret section of the factory service department firmware tools.  ???

I would not be a bit surprised if they already have everything required, just nobody there knows. This is the place where all of their mechanics quit at the same time. However, I have tried to get my firmware update even several times before then to no  avail.

Like I said, I can only guess. I Just cannot get anything done. I will ask at Elk Grove Power Sports, but that will be very inconvenient for me if I will have to leave the bike there.  You think it's possible that I can get an FW update as I wait? I can only get a recording when I call their number. I always end up with phone tag when I leave a number, as I rarely have my cell on.

My bikes have never had the commissioning done or anything, since the day I purchased them. Each now have around 7,500 miles,  but still run perfectly, so I am not too concerned . . . yet.

BTW, will you be able to make it to this?

FWIW, for the commissioning and 600 mile service, I dropped off my Zero at the dealership, walked across the street to McDonald's and had a leisurely breakfast, read a book on my Kindle Reader and after about an hour walked back to the dealership, paid the bill and rode home.

I don't think you'll have to leave your bike there unless they find something SERIOUSLY wrong with it.  Since you've been riding it without issue, that's not likely.

That's good to hear. But I wonder if that was when the shop was not very busy, off season there.

In Oak Grove (near Sacramento, CA) I am not sure what the off season is. It could be mid summer when it's very hot, such as around now.

They told me to bring it in first thing in the morning so the mechanic could look at it before anything else occupied his time.  Hence... BREAKFAST!
