Zero wont start - no BMS Error, no dash
« on: June 30, 2019, 08:40:13 PM »

I was taking a weekend ride on my 2013 Zero S and stopped for groceries, when I got back to the zero, it wouldn't start up.

Luckily I was just under 2 miles away from home, so I walked it home.

I got home, plugged it in (it should have been about 45% battery).  Nothing happened.
I checked the BMS LEDs, nothing on any of them.
I popped out the glass fuse from the top of the bms, waited ~30 seconds, then put it back in - no difference.

Any tips on how to further troubleshoot?

Bad ignition switch?

I doubt it.  It's probably only been flipped a dozen times in its life time.  Also the BMS should still indicate something.

Can you get the app to respond?  Maybe the MBB since I don't know what else would shut down the BMS.

Do you have the latest firmware? Zero told me they had a bug with hibernate where the bike would get stuck off. I'd try pressing the two reset buttons on the BMS for 5 second each, and see if you see any LEDs on the BMS board. If not, then your BMS is dead or hibernating. Unfortunately, if that doesn't fix it, a trip to the dealer to remove and reseat the BMS may be required. Or it may come out of it sometime soon.

Supposed to be much less likely to occur on the latest firmware though,

No, I'm not on the latest firmware.  It hasn't been worth wasting a day's worth of traveling to get it updated.  Where are the reset buttons on the BMS you're referring to?

See here.

Thanks; that partially fixed it.  Now the BMS is blinking LED 4 green every 2 seconds.
Nothing else works, but maybe its a bad fuse.

I ordered a new fuse.  ...Keeping my fingers crossed...

Did you try pressing in both buttons (at the same time) for several seconds?

I once had the same problem not long after I first got my DS 6.5.  Bike was totally dead, would not charge, would not do anything. It was a very hot day when this happened and I assume that was related.

Pressing both buttons in at the same time was the fix, IIRC. After a cool-down for at least an hour.  I never had the problem again.

Play around with those buttons some more and see if that is the fix.

Will the bike run and charge at this point?  If so it may be your DC-DC converter.  When mine was going out I lost all the dash and lights
but the bike would still ride fine.

Thanks for all the tips everyone.
I fixed it!

Step 1: Reset the BMS buttons.
Step 2: Test the fuse (not conductive)
Step 3: Replace the fuse https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/0001.2509/486-1773-ND/639709

I have no idea why it died.  Maybe I'll get the logs soon.

A 3.5 amp fuse? What fuse is that?

Anyway, it's possible that a fuse can break with nothing else being wrong.  A fuse can fail just like anything else, especially such smaller fuses.

Its a a glass fuse under the seat and on the left side of the battery on a silver box.

I can't find much on what it does.

I am glad you got it fixed! That's the important thing.

But does anybody here know what circuit that 3.15 amp fuse could be protecting?
