What DS tires would fit an FXS ?
« on: January 31, 2019, 08:03:22 AM »

I bought an FXS in 2017, on a $2000 year-end discount. They sold the last FX just before I reached the store  :( The FXS is great, but it slides on the gravel roads near my new house in the wet.

What dual-sport tires can I mount on the FSX rims ?
The handbook says the rims are 3.00 x 17" front and 3.50 x 17". Currently it's got Pirelli Diablo Rosso II 110/70-R17 and 140/70-R17

I'm thinking about Pirelli MT-60 130/80-17 for the rear, same as the DS, and 110/90 - 17 for the front.
Or maybe Pirelli Scorpion 130/80 R 17 on the rear and 110/70 R 17 for the front.

The number after the / is the aspect ratio, basically the height of the tire. As long as the width is correct, any tires should fit. You’ve got plenty of clearance in the front and I believe all the rear fenders are identical. If not order a FX rear fender which is about $40 if my memory is working. It is really just depends on the style of riding and personal preference. I personally would not run full knobbies on pavement. They will have poor traction and wear quickly.

I put a TKC80/Shinko 805 combo on my daughter's NC700x with 17" wheels and it is a blast on a gravel road now.

Handles fine on pavement too, but I don't think I'd try to scrape the pegs on it or anything.

Michelin Anakee 3 tires come highly recommended and are available in the correct sizes.

I use them on my F650GS and really like the tires. Plus, they also get good mileage and handle well on pavement.  :)

I'm a big fan of both the Avon Trailriders and the Metzler Tourance (not the next model), but the Tourance were better than the Trailriders near end-of-life.  I'm pretty sure you can get the trailriders in a size that fits the FXS, but I'm not sure about sizing on the tourance.

The Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR has good reviews, and you can get it in
110/70 R 17 : perfect size for the front
130/80 R 17 or 140/80 R 17 for the rear

In the attached file, I have listed the available sizes of some tires for the FXS.
Note that the FXS, the S and the SR have the same tires, so the table holds also for the S and SR.
The yellow part is for road and touring tires. The blue part is for DS or enduro tires.
The table is ordered in increasing diameter of the wheel, so it can help to find the nearest choice in case the original size does not exist.

I have also put some (very incomplete) data for the FX tires dimensions.

If some of you want to add data:
- here is a link for an editable version: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1TUcc90Mw93mKhC_PLnxq6MTnL94NDy1VBrjly8BeQc0/edit?usp=sharing
- or you can post them here and I will add them

Width plus or minus 10 usually fits ok on tires as well.

A taller aspect ratio will give you a bigger contact patch when cornering.

Some days after my last post (above), I have destroyed my rear tyre on a speed reducer.
I digged a little more, and realized that some of these tyres have radial structure (as the original Diablo Rosso), or diagonal. And the Metzeler Roadtec 01 is radial or diagonal depending on the size.
Finally, and to avoid problems, I decided to replace my tyre by the same: Pirelli Diablo Rosso 2

Amazing work. Thanks!

I talked to a parts guy at my Zero dealer, who wasn't much help, but had more luck at another store. So I now have Continental TKC-80, 120/70-R17 for the front and 130/80-R17 for the rear. Initially they gave me 140/80-R17 but that would have been too close to the rear fender.
