Just Put A Deposit on an FX, What Accessories Do I Need?
« on: January 27, 2019, 04:52:13 AM »

Just got back from doing a long demo of the FX and DS.  I opted to put a deposit down on a 2019 FX, should be here in 1-2 weeks.

I ordered it with the rear rack and 12v charger.  Any other accessories worth getting?

- Consider changing the seat for one more comfortable
- Add a small bag on the handlebar (8$ on aliexpress.com) to keep cable / rain pants

The rear rack was a good idea. I use the Givi E340 Top Box - Matte black (34 liters, $143), which looks good and fits a big helmet plus other things.

I also added Zero accessory handguards. They serve a few purposes: protecting hands from impact, protecting levers from breaking off in a fall, reducing cold air flow.

I don't know what your weather is like, but I put on the Koso Apollo heated grips, and here in CA that is just enough to keep me comfy all year round (night is 30 to 50 degrees all year). http://electricmotorcycleforum.com/boards/index.php?topic=7567

Be aware that there is a nice SAE 12V accessory plug in front of the batteries. Congrats on your new toy. Must be hard to wait that long for it!

Get some real bar ends, MSR makes some nice ones. Or get the hand guards. A brake lever is around $80 and nobody I can find makes anything aftermarket.

Where do you get seats for these and do you have a link to a handlebar bag?

You need to find a local company making made to order seats.
For the bag I would recommend riding to your local accessories shop. Since I'm riding in a city, i bought a cheap one (15$) and put superglue on the fixation to make it difficult to remove.

Small windscreen gets you more range and less flies... 🙃

As a former skydiver, cupped shoulders have a lot of drag.  Windscreen help a lot.

Thanks for the info.

Has anyone really done a windscreen mileage test on the Zero's?

I don't really want a windscreen on my FX, but if I actually get miles from it, then I'm interested.

Depends on your driving.
If you go above 100km/h for over 10km: you need 1, not only for comfort but for range!
I used to do ~28kW actual on Zero app at 125km/h without the Zero standard screen; and now ~18kW actual.
So a huge difference (the higher the speed).

This bag mounts nicely to the rear fender of my FXS with a simple extension to the straps. Not the greatest quality (and not waterproof!!!) but a cheap solution that fits my needs and doesn't seem like it wants to fly off.

I had an FXS for a while until it got totaled (I now have a DSR) and I would recommend spending the money on the Zero handguards made by Cycra and a decent windscreen.  I had this windscreen on my FXS and really liked it.  So much so that I also bought one for my DSR.

Edit:  I forgot one thing.  I would also get the rear rack from Zero, especially if you're going to be using the bike for commuting and need some storage space.  You can then buy an inexpensive top case to mount to the rack.  You don't need to go out and buy expensive Givi or SW-Motech cases.

Thanks for the good ideas.

I did get it with the rear rack and have some bags already that I can use for it.

I ordered the 12v accessory as well.  Not sure if I'd need it, but for $70 plug and play, seemed like a no brainer.

I was curious about the hand guards.  $170 is quite a bit for hand guards, but I plan to be taking this bike off pavement a bit, so probably makes sense.

The one I wasn't sure about was the windscreen.  I have no plans on highway travel on this bike.  I jumped on the freeway for maybe 5 miles at 70+ mph during the demo ride and lost 18% of the charge.  So, I won't be doing that at all on this bike.  This is just a back road, in town, off road kind of bike for me.  Guessing my average speed on it will be around 35 mph.

If a windscreen will get me more miles per charge when averaging 35 mph, then I'll get one.  But if it won't, then I'd rather not have one.
