c evolution charging issue
« on: September 30, 2018, 08:06:52 PM »

Hi
I have c evolution which hasn't been used for over a year now stored in my giant shed,
I am due to give it back to bmw under the lease agreement as i drive a car now.
My problem is that i can't charge it,nothing happens, the cable lights are showing the usual lights so no problems there.
So nothing at all is happening.
Is there anyone on here that can shed some like to this problem.
Regards

One year, and it was under lease?  I'd just tell BMW to come pick up their POS and get it out of your garage...

Yeah, I had a REALLY bad experience with an ICE scooter from BMW and got absolutely NO help at all from them, so they can go take a flying leap as far as I'm concerned.  I'm never buying another BMW product (other than what I need to keep my K1200LT running) as long as I live no matter HOW many wheels it may have.

Perhaps the batteries have "bricked" while the bike was in storage. I figure that could happen if there was a constant electrical drain while the bike was being stored.  With modern BMW motorcycles there is usually something going on and sucking up a little juice when the bikes are turned off.  In particular, their GPS systems seem to be problematic when they are supposed to be sleeping.   ???

Maybe measure the 12Volt battery, located underneath the upper right hand fairing... Had to replace mine when my C Evo was stored for a year.

Yup, it's the 12V battery. You can charge it using the 12V accessory port in the glove compartment. With no 12V, nothing will happen.

I think that it's probably too dead to charge with a trickle charger through the accessory port. I suggest that you remove the battery - or at least disconnect it - and charge with a higher current unit. It's an AGM battery and so if it's down below 8V or so it may be shot. It's a very common powersports Yuasa YTX9-BS which is pretty cheap and can be ordered on line from multiple places. There are also many substitutes available that can be cross-referenced.

That's the spirit.  I started riding BMWs in 1985 and I miss the days when their products were designed to last forever.  I think my 1999 K1200LT might be the last of that breed.

Sounds like maybe Trevor has discovered riding a motorcycle can be cold, and windy, and wet sometimes.
There is very little wrong with a C Evolution.

Adding that I agree riding a motorcycle is a base level of adventure, or more so, but rarely less. In deep snow for example I could be easily convinced to take public transit instead (or drive a car but I'm unhappy if it's a pollution vehicle). Stay electric, friends! :-)

You're right - I try and draw the line at riding in snow of any kind (although it was kind of fun when I was a kid).
