Might be joining the Zero family
« on: September 01, 2018, 11:39:50 AM »

I’ve got a potential deal lined up on a 2018 DS 13.0... I’ve got a couple ICE bikes, but I’m excited for something really unique and different!

Two main concerns are the range and the price. Reality is that my commute is well within range, probability for a few days without charging. I may add a charge tank later... we’ll see if that seems necessary down the line. The price... well... just gotta decide how much I want it!

Anyway, excited to (most likely) be part of the group soon!

Sounds good. You have to decide on the charge tank now. Its factory installed not dealer installed. If you don’t have it or get the charge tank your only option for fast charging is diginow. I was in the same decision process as you. After the test ride i bought it. Haven’t paid for gas going to work all summer. 7300 miles in 12 months.

I was led to believe (by Hollywood Electrics) that I could add a charge tank later. They also specifically said that they are no longer dealing with DigiNow though they thought they are good products. They even quoted me a price for an after-purchase charge tank + install (with a very long wait time for parts).... is this just not true?

Zero states it has to come from the factory.  At least for now.
If any dealer could make it happen after the fact it would be Hollywood Electrics.
I got the same response from them about Diginow.  I wonder if Zero just didn't want any side by side competition.

I got my zero used recently and it is incredible and you should definitely pick up that bike, you won't regret it.

I don't know if zero says the same for the power tank as the charge tank but according to previous owner my Zero didn't ship from the factory with its power tank, it was added later.

EDIT: If you have a short commute and gas bikes anyways, there's really no reason to worry about range and charging. Use the Zero for everything within rank and use your gas bikes for anything further right?

This year Zero is installing the Power Tank at the factory, which makes sense as it is much easier to do then instead of by a dealer after the customer buys the bike. But I think dealers will still install it as an after-sales accessory. Not cheap, though.

@richard420

I wonder if there were more cases like my bike, where they installed the 2016 PT on the 2015 12.5 bike, voltages didn't match or something, and fried the whole system. Months later, bike was returned with 2016 13.0 battery and 2016 controller.

I have no idea. I am happy that none of my three Zeros has had an issue that prevented them from running every day. I wasn't aware that there was that much of a difference between the 2015 and 2016 models that might have caused your problem.  ???  But I guess with Zero anything can happen.  ::)

I concur with the others.  You won't regret buying the bike.  I should note that the availability for extra options from Zero were confusing when I bought my 2017 SR (in fact one dealer didn't even know you can only choose one).  Here are the options:

- extra charging (charge tank), or
- extra battery ( power tank), or
- no extra anything, just the stock plastic storage area (saves $2000+)

In 2017 the S, SR charge tank was required to be factory installed, but our San Jose Zero dealer says 2018 charge tank is different and can be added although at higher cost than pre installed thus could increase your overall investment.

In the end, which option is really a personal preference based on your own expected usage.  Some are happy to wait overnight to get 80% batt., but others, like me, want to do some touring now and then. Anyway the dealer who sold me my 2017 SR told me I could add charge tank later and this sadly was not so.  Then again, recently I did an aftermarket purchase of diginow 9.9kw which seems a better option than the zero charge tank anyway.

All the best, and for goodness sake regardless of which option you choose, make sure to buy the bike!

Maybe it can be added now after the fact. I just went on there website and it doesn’t say it has to be installed from the factory. It used to when you read on the power tank.

The 2018 Charge Tank has to be installed from the factory, until proven otherwise, without it being a special favor.

Well, all that business about adding the change tank after the fact is irrelevant now.... the deal is made!

By the end of the week I will have my 2017 DSR with Chargetank AND for my wife we got a 2013 S with super low miles and some accessories. The 2013 was low enough, light enough, and fast enough that she was totally sold. The deal for the two together was too good to pass up! (but I will be selling my Triumph Street Triple to help finance the whole situation)

Looking forward to getting to know the Zero/EV community! Can’t wait to get out and ride!
