Sidestand too loose ?
« on: June 21, 2018, 05:15:27 AM »

Hello
When putting my 2016 FXS on its sidestand, the stand seems to bend more than previously. I think it was not so loose before, but I am not sure.
I have made a video to show that:
Does it look normal? If you could check on your bike and tell me if yours is stiff or loose like mine, I would appreciate.
Thanks

That's almost exactly the same amount of play my '14 FX kickstand has, which I believe uses the same pivot pin and mount (arm is shorter, but otherwise @ the same too).

Check models at dealer, if similar, should be okay. If still too loose and they don't feel that it is a warranty item,
you should be able to get a shim / washer to fit on either or both sides where it mounts.Too hot to go look at my
bikes right now, but, there might be two different size washers / shims needed. Shim washers probably best as
you should be able to find them in various thicknesses.

@ rayivers : Thanks for the information. Either our 2 bikes are OK, either they have he same problem  ;)

@ KrazyEd : I am more than 200 kms away from the dealer. It means that I have to put the bike on a trailer, and drive more than 400 kms, just to meet the closer dealer. You can understand that for me this forum iis priceless ! But you gave me the idea to send the video to the dealer. I will see if he is a conscientious guy...

Sorry to hear about the distance. There is a Zero Dealer less than 10 miles from me.
Have never dealt with them other than visiting the store a couple times.
Whenever anything is needed, I take my Zeros to Hollywood Electrics about 300 miles away.
No reason to believe that the local dealer is not qualified, but, when I purchased my FIRST Zero, there
were no dealers in town. Have had excellent experience with Hollywood, so no reason to switch.
That being said, I went out and checked my SR. The play seems to be about half
of what yours is. There is a good chance that it may have been loose causing the top of the
aluminum stand to have spread, making it looser. If you remove it, you should be able to tell.
Once removed, if it appears to be deformed, you can work on getting it back to where it needs
to be.
BEST way would be to get a bolt an inch or so longer than needed to fit through.
Place a Large flat washer on each end of the bolt then tighten the nut down to
gently squeeze it back to the proper width. If you have the ability to apply some heat, that would help.
A more brute force way would be to just pound it back into shape. This is quick and dirty, but has
the possible downside of breaking it or making it too tight.
Probably should have suggested this in the first place.
Hope this helps

Thank you KrazyEd. I have ordered today a scissor jack lift. As soon as I get it, I will disassemble the stand and inspect it carefully.

Let us know how this goes, and thanks for the illustrative video. Maybe I'll go drop by a dealer myself to check for play in kickstands (after talking to them about it so they don't think I'm weirder than they already expect me to be).

I have received the  scissor jack lift, but it is the model in the attached picture, and it is quite unsteady. When I tried to lift the bike, I almost dropped it. So, I have to secure the bike and do it again. I will do it when I find some time and report it here.

On the contrary, the one I showed in this other thread was quite stiff, but too high...

Drag Specialties' works for me. Reviewed/tested options are listed at:
https://zeromanual.com/index.php/Lift

A wide lift is important because the pan is not perfectly flat.

I too use the Drag Specialties lift. I like that it is simple (no hydraulics), very low and compact when collapsed and has a large rubber friction surface that clings to the bottom of the Zero belly pan.

When looking at your picture, I realized that I put my scissor jack lift in the bad way (perpendicular to your picture), and the bike leaned from right to left, almost falling.
I have put it today like in your image, and it is OK. The bike can lean a little bit back and forth, but it is not a problem.
Here is a video, showing also the rubber sheet (15mm thick) that I put between the scissor jack lift and the bike (sold as anti vibrating plate for washing machines in your DIY store)

I could see that the axis of the kickstand has a lot of play:

I did not remove the kickstand today, since I will have to do it soon: I have ordered a lowering kit (shortened shock, shortened kickstand, and lowered saddle), and I will do all that together.

My 2016 sidestand has half as much play as yours. I'm at a loss to see how the fork could expand, as its width is bounded by the circlip on the pin. Could your circlip be bent?

I noticed that when I rock my bike back and forth while it's on the sidestand, the whole arm flexes quite a bit and almost looks rubbery (maybe the aluminum will eventually fatigue?)

I have replaced my sidestand yesterday, since I have lowered my bike, and replaced the sidestand by a shorter one.
There is no play in the new sidestand.
All the other parts are unchanged.
It means that the play was coming from the aluminum main part of the sidestand.
Problem solved.

I will include a note in the unofficial manual about the lift orientation, but we already depict it, so I’ll set about making better “lift the bike” steps in procedures.

May I inquire how did using it in the original orientation occur to you?
