Crash protectors
« on: November 05, 2017, 06:52:10 PM »

I am thinking about adding some crash protectors to my SR16. Found those on the web:

http://www.rg-racing.com/browsebike/Zero/S_-_Streetfighter/2017/CP0348BL/

Any comment to those? Has anyone experience with crash bars?

Thanks

Michael

I've read reviews from people who thought the crash bumpers saved their fairing, while others claimed they caused the frame to bend. The ones in the link look like they've mounted at a weak point, but the fastener holes are small so maybe the bumpers will break away instead. The Zero drop bars distribute the load and might protect your legs, though you lose the streetfighter look.

Those only fit 2013 models. The frame and plastics design changed after that so you'd have to go Zero crash bars or home made.

The RG Racing crash protectors can fit the 2014+ models but you'll need to cut away some of the lower black plastic fairings. I removed the black plastics altogether but that's not necessary to get them to fit. Photos are of a 2014 SR.

Thanks for the replies.

The zero drop bars look pretty big and indeed to obtrusive to my eye :)

I guess I will not need them very often as most of my driving (>90%) is just for commuting. But I am thinking of going (just a little bit!!) into Gymkhana next year. Looks like an awful lot of fun and it is not that dangerous because of the low speed. However, without any protection I would be pretty sad if I damage my beautiful SR16 too much.

@evtricity: Did you already had the unfortunate experience to test them in real life?  :D

Neuer_User, I have unopened box of exactly these protectors. DM if you're interested?

Been lucky enough not to drop my SR so I can't vouch for whether they work. They do provide an awesome point for securing a fairing though ;)

If you go and do Gymkhana prepare to drop your bike many, many times.

Yeah, it looks prone to that. This is why I am looking for some protection here. Although, do not expect me to go into full competition anywhere soon. I rather start very slowly with just practising this U-turn style (with using the front brake during the turn to decrease the radius). Will be difficult enough, I guess :D

I have the SP (police model) crash bars on my 2014 SR.  They widen the motorcycle to 28in.  Well, that's about handlebar width.

I've taken a couple of spills with them, always on the left for some reason.  The big bolt bends, is easily replaced.

Any update that? :)

I'm a bit afraid that the frame may bent when the bike crashed on the 'protectors'.
