[Solved] Fan issue ?
« on: October 05, 2017, 05:01:12 PM »

Since some weeks, the fan of my zero (located inside the battery block ? didnt noticed the bike have a fan before !) is continuously running at 100% of speed, during all the time the bike is keyed ON.

It generate a hearable fan sound, and also small vibration in the handlebars. Is it normal ? Due to last firmware update ?

Do you have any error codes or indicator lights that are abnormal too, like ABS?

No everything is normal (if you except the other bug i have posted here : http://electricmotorcycleforum.com/boards/index.php?topic=7404 but both was not occurs together. I had the fan issue, and at least 1 week after the battery % issue).

I key ON, fan goes to 100% and sound loudly. Lights goes on and off normally on the bike display. Fan stay at 100% during all my travel and stop only when i key off.

Did someone install an LED headlight kit as a present? Do you have a charger under the tank cover? Is someone playing a joke on you? That's all I've got for now.

The battery box is sealed.  No way for air to move in or out.  I think what your hearing is the motor.
Like when you turn it on and just push it, it makes a sort of whine.
The 2016's have an IPM motor that needs to have the timing set every so often.
Unless your bike was second hand and the first owner installed a cooling fan for the chargers there is no fan.
I'd take it to the dealer since it's under warranty anyway.
Good luck.

LED headlight ???

I just replaced my H4 main light by a led one (not by myself, but my dealer did). Is there a fan with the led light ??? Why ???

My bike is a first hand.

Ok I didn't even think about an LED light.  That would be your only fan then.  If the dealer put it in let them check it out.  Those little things get hot.

got it ! Thank you for pointing it

The glass of my headlight have been melted some times ago (dont know why, except that the glass is always very hot when the bike is ON...)

Warranty did the job and i have got a new one. I asked my dealer to replace the H4 by a led. He didnt told me than there is a f**ing fan with this light.

LED light is always cold, Is there any reason to add a fan ??? Can i disconnect it ? It is very loud and make vibration in the handlebar !

Which brand LED? My red OPT7 has a fan at the base of the bulb. I have a love-hate relationship with the noise.

I replaced my headlight after there was an incident that resulted in the lens melting too. If the manufacturer put a fan on the bulb, they must have thought it was necessary for a long enough life. There are other LED bulbs you could get, though, that don't have a fan. There was an active thread about a year ago on this forum about LED headlights.

LED bulbs in general do run quite a bit cooler than the equivalent incandescent lamp, but they can't take anywhere near as much heat -- incandescent lamps love heat! So for a really high-output LED bulb, it's challenging to dissipate the heat and keep the LEDs themselves below their maximum temp with some safety margin. A lot of the designs do use fans just because it's easier to design that way, but there are some designs out there that manage without fans. Personally, I like the fanless designs...I don't care all that much about the noise, but why would you put 50,000-hour life LEDs in a system where they're relying on a cheap fan that probably has a much shorter life? If the blower fails, the LEDs are going to fail too.

I really like these. Flexible copper heatsinks are very versatile.
