Just bought 2017 FX modular - charging and accessory info needed
« on: September 08, 2017, 03:05:59 AM »

Hi everybody,

My 2017 Zero FX 6.5 KW modular should arrive in a few days and I'm looking for accessory and charging info help.  I currently have an EV charger in my garage (15 KW 60 Amp [Juice box]) with the J1772 plug.  I think it's all connected to a 40 amp circuit in my power panel.  I emailed Brandon at Diginow for info.  I'm also wondering about charging options when I'm away from my garage and only have standard outlets?  Maybe I should get two Zero Quicks and module adaptors or would you recommend other options?  I'd like moderate to fast charging, but don't want to spend too much.  What do you suggest?

Thanks!

I have two Quiqs and pack adaptors and four packs for my FX. That works very well for me. Here are all the charging possibilities. http://zeromanual.com/index.php/Advanced_Modifications#Charging_Off_Bike

Wow Keith, that sounds like a sweet setup!  Maybe someday I'll have another pack or two, but that will have to wait ($$!)  I have considered what it would be like to have one Quick (with module) and ride with one pack while the other is charging.  What would that be like?  I won't receive my new FX bike for a few days at the earliest, so I've never ridden it with just one pack.  I think I want one Elcon or Diginow for my garage and then 1 or 2 Quicks and modules for when I trailer the bike elsewhere.  I currently swap batteries with my electric mountain bike (1500 Watt middrive [BBSHD]) with 1.2 KW packs and it has been great, so I'm excited about the FX battery swapping/charging capabilities.

The FX with one pack is pretty good off road, lighter of course, and has enough power for most situations. Range is very limited, 20 miles or so, and the power does get noticeably less as the charge gets low, say below 30%. But if you can loop back and swap packs it might be a good way to ride all day. One pack will of course charge twice as fast as two for a given charger setup. One pack on the highway is not so good, the lack of horsepower above 50-60mph is very noticeable. I mostly ride mine with two packs except on my very tight single track trails on my land, but I am spoiled with my setup. I have yet to hear of anyone else who has the same.

Alright, thanks for the "riding with one pack" info.  I can see myself doing that in a couple situations.  Maybe I will even see that I like tooling around my neighborhood and suburb with one pack while the other charges.  I can definitely see the advantage of doing it at a cabin in Island Park, ID that has loads of trails right next door.  I doubt I will even ride at highway speeds very often...but if I did, of course I would only use two packs at once.

I'm curious on your thoughts on belt or added chain drive?  I'm going to be riding a fire break road that is moderately rough, but not so much that regular cars can't drive it.  I really hope to keep the silence of my belt, but unsure if it is that likely I'll snap it or mess it up on the bumpy, fire break road.  What are your thoughts on that?

So I have had my fxs for about four months. I had no choice but to get the modular. My apartment does not have outlets in the garage so I went with two quicks. I lug the two batteries upstairs when they need charging. I live in the city and use my big bike for longer rides.

So far I'm very happy with this setup. Not to mention how great the fxs is in the city. I get about 40 to 45 miles on a charge and with the two chargers can get full charge in 2 hours 45 minutes.  With a busy work schedule I typically charge up on a Friday night and depending on the weekend one or two more times during the weekend.  It's been working great. Can't be happier having spent the extra money on charging.

I haven't considered the chain conversion so can't help you there.

You are going to love this bike.

From others' reports, it seems that belt break is pretty likely at some point if riding off pavement.  The most common cause is sudden wheel spins/stops such as when jumping or transitioning from slick to grippy surfaces, with debris being a second common cause.  Another FX owner on this site created a "reserve belt" system that can limp the bike home, but chains are the best way to ensure you're never stranded.  The noise of the chain will forever bother you though, so you pretty much have to decide between the two evils based on your situation.

For your intended off road riding, I'd start with the belt. The 2017 fx have a wider belt and should not break easily. You can always upgrade down the road.
The emergency belt kit do not fit the 2017 models.

That's right, the belt is wider with the 2017 and hopefully, that would help somewhat.  I am sticking with the belt for now and will go chain if I feel I need it in the future.
