96 volts or 2 x 48 volts, which setup should I use
« on: December 23, 2009, 06:26:22 AM »

Addressing power requirements for my new project, I plan to use 96 volts worth of lead acid batteries, (8 x 20ah)
My question is would it be better to run two 48 volt packs in series which would allow me to charge the packs simultaneously (2 x 48v using two separate chargers)
Or would it be better to make one 96 volt pack and use one charger.

Or does it make any difference.

the smaller number of groups you can make, and charge in smaller groups, the more balanced the cells will remain.

if you have 2 - 48V packs and charged with 48V, it would be MORE likely to become unbalanced than having 4 - 24V packs and charging them with 4 - 24V chargers. In other words, splitting into 4 groups is better.

8 - 12V batteries and 8-12V chargers would be even better (and ideal, since this is the lowest grouping you can do).

A single pack-votlage charger is one of the reasons the batteries become unbalanced, so any time you can break it down and charge in smaller groups, it lessens the severity of how unbalanced the cells can become.

my opinion, break it into as many small chargers as you can, whether it be 2-48V, 4-24V or 8-12V.
