2017 SR problems
« on: May 01, 2017, 02:05:14 AM »

Hello everyone. I bought a 2017 SR and just had my second problem with it today. At around 1500 miles the onboard charger stopped working. The bike at the time had about 63% charge so i rode it into the dealership for them to assess it. They ended up having to replace the charger. The dealership themselves don't have expeirence working on zeros so had to do all the work by getting instructions from zero over the phone. Since the charger replacement I have had the bike briefly cut off power a few times while riding. Usually it last for about a second until the power kicks back on. The red no power light also flashes alot.

Now today i was about to take it out and when i turn it on the bike shows a battery level of 0% and provides no power. Its actual charge was around 93% last time i rode it. I tried plugging it in to see if it would change anything and the green charge light would come on but not display any estimated charge time. My dealership is closed until tuesday so won't be able to talk to them until then.

Try to reset the BMS. It probably won't help but it's at least worth a try.

Wow, this is exactly what my 2015 SR did. New charger within a few weeks. Random shutoffs while riding. Stranded for a few minutes during startups a few times while the dash freaked out. Then, unable to maintain 60 or 70 MPH even.

I mean, the same, until after the shutdowns.

Resetting the BMS is probably a good idea. Have you pulled logs and E-mailed them in? Check for a firmware update? You can update from home, that may help. I've have four updates at dealerships trying to fix my problems.

I'm hoping someone can edit the procedure int the wiki to indicate if the bike is supposed to be turned on (am guessing the answer is "yes," but would like to know for certain.

I've always done BMS reset with the bike off.

Are your power downs mostly under ~10MPH also? Mine are usually when I'm parking, first leaving, or pulling away from a stop/traffic light. I'm curious how you aren't freaked out by these more? I've been trying to find a solution or get it fixed for nearly two years.

I had that problem with my 2012 S. I would be sitting at a stop light and when I went to turn the throttle, nothing would happen. I would have to push it to the side of the street, reboot the bike and then it would run again. This happened several times during the first couple of months that I owned that Zero. It turned out to be a defective throttle assembly.  The factory picked up the bike at my home, replaced the throttle assembly, returned the bike to me and it never had that problem again.   :)

Mine completely turns off, dash, headlights, everything. Takes a few seconds to start back up, then I have throttle again. I took a left at a stop light in the dark once and lost power in front of oncoming traffic. Dude coming at me saw me before I went into unpowered stealth mode luckily.

All I've gotten was firmware updates from three dealers. I'm not lucky enough to be near the factory, I'm on the East Coast. Zero won't reply to my E-mails anymore after I asked for a refund.

David S - It’s interesting your 17 SR shut completely down and maybe the charger is bad.

'nevetsyad' also mentioned his 15 SR did the same. Also the on-board charger was replaced.

My 14 SR did the same exact thing the other morning about 100 feet from my residence.
Everything turned off as yours did. I never turned the key off. About 15 seconds later, all was OK again.
Later that day, I did reset the BMS.  So far, its been a one-time event.
My SR has the power tank, odometer just turned 20K, and the only charger I have is the on-board.
My on-board charger also quit not long ago just out of warranty but thankfully Zero covered it.

Something is happening as this problem is not year specific. But what ?????

I hope we're lucky to ID the issue very soon as Richard230 did on his 12 S.

The power cut offs i have usually happen at higher speeds, maybe between 35-60mph, always lasting maybe a second then regaining power. It is definitely a concern of mine if im in the middle lane of a highway but only happened a few times for a second.

I checked for firmware updates and it said none available.

After i tried plugging the bike in to charge, it now will not go into an actual "off mode". When keyed there, the green charge light still displays(not plugged in) and the battery display still shows 0%.

I tried to do the bms reset but it was unresponsive. No lights were displaying on those ports because i believe the bike still believes it is on.

For what it's worth I'd have them check the key switch or relay that goes with it.
I had a 92 Maxima that would do that I'd be driving down the road and it would just turn off.  No sputering no power lag just "off".  It happened more more often and then wouldn't just restart so I took it in and one $25 relay later problem solved.
Someone else on here had a problem like this and that was the issue.  Sounds like they need a new switch guy on the factory line.
Good luck.

I had them check my key switch. Some people reported the turning left stressed the barely long enough power cables, and they'd briefly unplug when turning. I was told mine have plenty of slack. If his are tight enough to come out at 40MPH without the wheel turned sharp, he probably wouldn't be able to turn without yanking them out.

Just a thought.

My 2012 S never shut off when the power died.  It just sat for a short while before wanting to go again and then would run fine for the rest of the day.  So obviously, a bad throttle isn't your problem.  I might add that Zero's customer service was a little different during 2012 than it is now.  :( If anything like that happened to my bike now, I am sure I wouldn't get that kind of attention anymore.  ;)

My 2015 FX 5.7 also had a few similar cut-off issues... power loss within 100ft of my residence when first starting out, resolved within a minute including a key cycle.  It only happened when temps were low (around 40F), and hasn't happened in over a year (about 1,000 miles since).  I think it gave a 4-3 error code.
