2013 DS chain drive
« on: March 08, 2017, 02:55:32 AM »

Hello all,

Just purchased a new to me 2013 DS. I see Zero has a chain drive conversion available for the FX model. From my research the FX has a 75-5 motor while my DS has a 75-7 motor. I don't know what this means other than the -5 motor is smaller than the -7 motor in output and physical size. Would anyone know if the front pulley off a -5 motor will fit on a -7 motor or is the shaft a different size between the two? I would like to do a chain conversion for personal reasons. I'm less driven by efficiency and range, and care more about ability to change gearing when going to ride a couple sessions on the track. I'm sure I can get a rear pully made to fit but the front sprocket would be easy to source from Zero.
Thanks all. Lots of knowledge on this site.

The 2014 DS also uses the 75-7 motor, and the 30-03657 28T front pulley w/1" finished bore.  Since the '13-'16 chain kit uses a 1" finished-bore chain sprocket, it's safe to assume this chain kit (w/o chain guide) will fit your '13 DS.

I believe the '13-'16 kit's chain & sprockets will fit all '13-'16 Zeros, but since only the FX & FXS have the swingarm mount for the chain guide, Zero lists the (complete) kit as fitting only those two models.

Thank you for the info Ray, I will follow up with my local dealer to see if I can get the front sprocket separately vs. Buying the whole kit.

The front sprocket (12T) is Zero p/n 30-03656 02, and the rear (65T) is 30-05090 02.  AFAIK the Zero front sprocket is the only game in town without machine work, and their rear sprocket is lighter and probably cheaper than a custom one.

Here's an EMF thread with more chain-drive info:
