Replacement handlebars for SR
« on: November 18, 2016, 09:34:35 PM »

I searched the Forum and couldn't find anything related to this.  I'm very interested in swapping my stock handlebar on my 16 SR.  I would go with risers but it might be just as easy to find different handlebars.  I'm thinking of something along the lines of this...http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/biltwell-maynard-78-handlebars

Has anyone successfully swapped the handlebars on their Zero?

Hey there zpz... to answer your question, I have not swapped handlebars and do not know anybody who has on an SR. I too have a 16 SR and am fairly new to sport/naked bikes. May I ask why you are seeking to swap handlebars? I genuinely don't know much about this and am trying to learn. Do you ride aggressively and are looking for a performance or operability upgrade? Since I purchased my zero back in April, I've started to ride it much more aggressively than I ever thought I would. Took a couple different courses (including the YCRS Yamaha Racing school - which is the shizzzit). Am starting to really get into it and the idea of upgrading my bike for better racing and cornering performance has been on my mind. Just curious if that is what you are seeking as well? Also, if you are anywhere near SoCal - Let's ride! Thanks, sorry for the rant...

Others have talked about it.  Seems like there was an issue with the throttle.  Its pinned into the bar so it was hard to rotate to a different  angle. You might have to drill a new hole in a new bar.

If you are just looking for a more upright riding position I would just go with rox risers.  If you really want to change bars look for a post by @quixotic.  He changed his bars... clubman's if memory serves me.

I'm changing my bars on my S , after I get the new ones on I'll post results,  also you have to get the bars with the 1 1/8 diameter clamps , the ones you listed were 7/8

I welded up a set of my own that go up and back about 6 inches to make room for my dog

Used 1 1/8" tubing for the base 1" for the risers and 7/8" for the grips and controls

Grips are 7/8's but the bars get bigger in the middle where they get clamped.  @BrianTRice documented in the Unofficial Zero Manual based on the following thread.

Np....this isn't a mod I have not done for myself but according to the thread I linked above you should be able to add 1.5" with the existing cables.

So on my '16 SR, the only limitation to rising the handlebars is the front brake line.  Theres not much play in it at all.   Ill be luck to accomodate these 1 1/4" offset risers.  I guess Ill order them and see what happens.

Terry,  how did you extend the front brake line?

you can loosen the clamps that hold the brake lines and route them more directly.  I added 6" of height and it wasn't a problem.
