Awesome info, thanks! For those that installed a quick charger in your hard bag(s), do you leave your case open when charging or did you modify your case so only the cord sticks out?

Did you drill air holes in the bottom or sides of your bags?  My Elcon should be here any day and I was wondering if i need ed to drill holes for better air circulation, for example holes on the side where the elcon's fan is

dukecola,

I have my Elcons mounted in the 37 liter SW-MOTECH side cases with quick release mounts. Have never drilled any kind of holes in them for air circulation. I live in North Carolina and have charged in temps from mid 90's down to about mid 20's or so. If it is warm the lids are fully open. If it is raining out I will have the lids partially closed just to keep the rain out. Have never noticed any issues. There is room enough in the side cases to carry other power adaptors and such. Something to keep in mind is that the charging algorithms on the 2016 SR have changed compared to the 2014 that I had. Charging at the very end slows down a lot! I understand sometimes you really do need your battery at 100% before you take off. But that last 1-2% can take 15-20 minutes to get. When I see the light on the Elcons turn green I wait about 5 minutes and then unplug. That will put you at 98-99% SOC. The dash may be showing 90% or so when the green lights shows on your Elcons but when you unplug everything and turn your bike on you will see 98-99% SOC. Just know that your Elcons are a better indicator of when your bike is fully charged than what your dash may show.

Hello,
I would like to buy an Elcon 2.5KW for my '15 SR. In the website they mentioned that you can use one of the 10 charging curve. Do you know which one is the right one for Zero battery? Also, the voltage should be set to 116V correct?

Thanks,
Giacomo

It will all be set up for you when you get it.  Hollywood Electrics programs the CC/CV algorithms specifically for the Zero, upgrades the input and output connectors for the high current to increase reliability, adds a BMS controlled enable to control the charger which prevents over voltage or over temp of the cells, and has a J1772 harness solution that has the mating end of the higher current connectors and also an onboard charger pigtail.  They really did a good job at this.

Not exactly, but if you buy Hollywood Electrics' version with their cabling, you wind up using the Elcon in parallel with the onboard charger, so that you can turn the bike off and keep charging at 3.8kW.

You can use Elcon chargers either with the onboard charger or without the onboard charger. To use an Elcon charger without the onboard charger you just need to start the charging process with the bike powered on.

Terry, while I bet the Hollywoodelectrics Elcon is the best at $1300.  Yet are there any DYI people making buying the $675 Elcon http://www.elconchargers.com/catalog/item/7344653/7638094.htm, have Elcon program it for Zero, and then updating the cables to what is best?  Seems like the only hard part would be the BMS control.  Sound like Elcon programs them to the customer spec for free.

No, you don't need to keep the bike powered on. The Elcon sends a signal through the accessory port that keeps the bike in charge mode, but it can't initiate charge mode through the accessory port.

The Charge Tank works the same way.
