FX frame touch up
« on: October 04, 2016, 01:29:13 AM »

I've got a couple of small nicks and scratches on my frame and was wondering what might be good for touching up that black paint?

Some auto accessory stores carry a line of auto touch-up paint in bottles something like nail polish, that have an integral small brush.  The cost is around $5.  You will have to guess about the shade of black paint, but they are sure to have a "universal" black color.  Sometimes they will also have flat black and semi-gloss black.  Alternately, you could go to a hardware store (such as Ace Hardware), or any hobby store and check out their colors of plastic model paint.  The hobby store will have several different shades of black paint - assuming that there are any hobby stores left in your area that haven't been closed due to the internet and rising rent prices.   :(

For larger areas I've used Dupli-Color DE1634 low-gloss engine paint, and for smaller nicks etc. I've used a 60/40 mix of Testor's flat and gloss black model paint (the Testor's semi-gloss is too shiny).  I've also used D-C DA1600 black for a few things too, when I wanted a gloss finish.  The hard part is getting the textured look back again when touching up small spots; I put on a little extra paint and then kind of 'stab' it with the brush a bunch of times while it dries, which has worked OK so far.

Here are all three of the above, next to OEM Zero black(s). The brake cylinder mount is DE1634, the guard is DA1600, and the area around the setscrew (to the right of the top mount bolt) is the 60/40 Testor's mix.
