What did you do to achieve such a high number?

Go slow? I did not see the speedo climb much over 20mph and if it did, it was for very short periods...

There are two elements that allow higher mileage at lower speeds. First is the resistance from the air is much lower at low speeds. Second, because of that, the currents that are drawn from the battery are much lower. The same battery will offer higher Ah capacity at low current draws than at high. The difference can be quite significant, easily 20%.

Cruising at 20 mph as opposed to freeway speeds? With these batteries? I'd be very surprised. Compared to full throttle, sure, or with inferior batteries, yeah, but I can't imagine there's that much difference in these circumstances. Do you have a data sheet or any experimental data to point to?

What do you do for a living Terry? I ask because I often wonder how you find all the time to do this stuff!

I do not have data for the Zero batteries. But you can look at data for the Leaf batteries, which are also very high quality.

Here: http://hybridautocenter.com/HAC4/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=72&Itemid=631

Also, reduced capacity with higher current draws has been demonstrated for other very good industrial batteries.

It would be interesting if someone has data about the Zero batteries about that ...

Like he posted, he spent the time leisurely going from between dog parks and dog-friendly beaches.

What did you do to achieve such a high number?

I just rode with traffic on surface beach front streets from dog beach to dog beach all over the Monterey bay area.  Now that I've done this I'll bet I could do 250, and a 2016 with the ZF 13.0 pack and power tank might be able to do 300 without carrying a dog.

Nice job Terry!  I'm struggling to keep my energy consumption down to 100Wh/mi on the highway.

100Wh/mi on the highway is a good figure for a stock bike with side mounted chargers!

You look like a pretty skinny guy, Ben.  With no dog and your minimal cargo, I bet you could beat Terry if you took the time to do it.  Especially if you left the three heavy chargers behind for the test.

Terry, did you have the supercharger onboard?

No I removed the supercharger as well as took off my top and side cases for the run.  Not because of aero drag, but because  of weight.  Rolling resistance from energy used to squeeze the tire rubber as the wheel turns is the highest form of drag under 25 mph.   At 28 psi the best I could get was 45 wh/mile.  At 42 psi I got under 40 riding the same exact route.  After taking off some weight of the cases and supercharger, and going a little higher on the tire pressure I got 32 wh/mile on the loop I take charger to the dog beach in the early morning.  So with that setup with regular riding with traffic around Santa Cruz county I had 38 wh/mile after the almost 237 miles.

No doubt Ben could do better without carrying a dog lol.  But he has the 2014 battery, so it would be close.  Someone with a 2016 S with a powertank has the best shot to be the first to break 250 on a stock bike.
