Charging ends before 100%
« on: May 03, 2016, 02:28:50 AM »

I own a 2014 Zero S and I have noticed the last few times I have charged it stops before 100%. Today it stopped on 95%, last time on 96%. Is this something that is normal? Anyone else experiencing this?

My 2014 SR has done this for many months. It usually finishes charging somewhere between 87-93% and remains at that level even after the bike is turned back on later that day. The battery voltage is still 116 volts so I know it is being charged to full even if the dash does not show it.

I see this on my 2014 all the time. If I unplug, wait for the dash to go blank and then plug back in it will immediately show 100%. In other words, the bike is fully charged but there is a glitch with the display.

Also, if you unplug and wait for the display to go blank and then turn the bike on it will usually show 100%.

My 2014 S will charge to 98% then 24 hours later the charger comes back on and finishes charging to 100%. Balancing occurs during both charging periods.  :)

On the 2016's the only way you know true SOC when charging is to unplug everything, let it shut down and then turn the bike on. On a recent trip I planned to charge for an hour twice instead of a single two hour charge with my Elcons. At the end of an hour the dash showed about 60% SOC. When I turned the bike on the SOC jumped to 75% SOC. Similar experience with the second hour of charging later. This is made worse by the fact that charging the last 2% or so is far slower than the 2014's. Bottom line is you are done charging when the green light on the Elcons comes on. At that point you are about 98-99% SOC regardless of what the dash or app may show. If you try to get that last 1-2% it can take up to 40 minutes or more.

I got my 2013 FX used, so, can't speak to any initial charging when new. From day one, it would charge to 95%, showing 5.0x kW.
I noticed by accident that if I unplugged it, then, plugged it back in, it would go to 97% 5.122 kw ( or, something like that ). If I
unplugged it a second time, then plugged it back in, it would charge to 100% 5.336 kw. Not sure if it ever went higher than that,
but, that is the highest it has ever been since I have owned it. I also have the external charger. If I plug in both chargers, it charges
to 100% first time. The next morning, when I come out, no matter how high the finished charge was, it was at 95%. Lately,
( two years and 10K miles later ) is is only showing between 87% and 91% after settling down. Again, no matter how high the
charge was at completion. I discovered that if I took bike off of charger at 100%, then, rode, it dropped to 95% after almost
no distance, so, figured that it just took off the "surface charge" and put me back to where it would have been the next day.

For what it's worth, having been a nuclear technician in the US Navy and training on land-based submarine mockups with 300kW IGBT-based AC-DC power converters, I am impressed when any instrument that measures an electrochemical state winds up being accurate OR precise. Or ... not on fire.

What may be happening at least in some cases is that the charging actually does stop at 100% but the dash and the phone app do not reflect that. That is why if you unplug the charger when it shows 70% SOC  when you turn the bike on the SOC will be much higher. Have seen that several times.
