Is it any more dangerous than working on a vehicle with potential electric sparks and a tank full of high explosives???

yes.  one accidental short can kill. Connecting something incorrectly can fry it. While not knowing what you're doing with electricity is dangerous, knowing electronics but working without a guide is also unsafe.

Meanwhile a mechanic from 1950s could work on a modern car and not have much issue.

There is way to much to go wrong on a liability side; you can instantly roach your motor, controller, electronics, not to mention if you have a serious malfunction and you have a run away setting the encoder angle or timing you could have a really bad day!!! Bikes or parts flying though your work area at high speeds....

yeah... because having people poke around with no guide is SOOOO much safer.

Thats the point
Without the proper software and passwords you wont even get in....

You can change one little setting and the bike could WOT in reverse, you think you can wrestle the bike to the ground?  EDIT: well 2, one for the encoder direction and one if you wanted a crazy responce that might set it off, the mbb might be able to fault it before there is a real issue ( if you turn on a bike with throttle enguaged it will fault). These can easily happen if some novice is in the setting playing around going well if i change the mv responce on the throttle i can make my bike faster blah blah

You can prod and poke around all you want without a manual, but without the proper software and passwords tour arnt going to change anything, if they give everyone access to these passwords and software they would be going backwards

You cant lg onto a tesla and just start changing settings

In fact i would wager money that no one in here can change and reprogram a tire pressure sensor on a toyota 2010 and up without toyota software and passwords...  And toyota doesnt give that software and info to anyone except dealers.... And thats only yhr tire pressure;

You guys all want the dcfs and access to everything

Ask a specific question and im sure someone with access to "what you all beleive they have as a service manual" will answer it....

You're going to stupid extremes.. that toyota you mentioned doesnt have the software in the manual either. Its has a number where you can buy the software/hardware to set it with their stuff.

We're just asking for the basic layout and the part swapping stuff.  The emphasis would be on how to make sure things like that encoder were properly aligned... not how the software worked.

but while we're on the subject of their software, they sure do like The Matrix.

Also for the record.. while I cant do it with a toyota, heres a list of the cars I have full control over right now:

The encoder is all software related so you can log in and fuck your shit up.... This is why there are so many versions of the dongle

Basic
 dealer level logins
Hi level some code writing
Full access

(Just like toyota you can pay enough and get the login and dongle), some on here have a dongle and password, a few have a few different levels. But that still is not the dcf....

If you were to go through with an encoder setup and didnt know what you were doing or sidnt have full access you would brick your bike.... How does giving people access to that help zero, it ONLY gives them more issues....

If someone came on here and was like hey i have a fx it started acting funny wont charge and accelerates very slowly, then upon turning it off and then
on nothing.... Some can easily go through a list of things to do,

Depending on error code if any....

Check the sand filled fuses,
Probe the terminals on the battery to check fet

If specific problems were brought up they would and mostly do get answers, if your just probing for fun then why would they let you in.....

The basic owners manual does exist.  :p

You're all going off on extreme tangents.  I'm looking for a BASIC SERVICE manual, NOT a basic owner's manual.  I already have one of those, and it does NOT include a basic wiring diagram, nor does it include where the relays are installed and what they control.  I don't give a **** about reprogramming anything on the bike beyond what is already available in the smartphone app.  But I WOULD like to know which wires in the harness connect to which bulbs and what relays control which circuits.  I don't think that should be a deep, dark, corporate secret... it is basic ownership and servicing knowledge.

You know what else would be helpful?  TORQUE SPECS when removing or tightening bolts!  This is all basic stuff that would be in a basic service manual along with part numbers so I'd know what I'd need and what to order.

Burton has already created a wiring diagram for his zero,, and has YouTube video to check motor encoder alignment. Software is available to change motor controller settings. Members are finding ways around Zero information restrictions. But they should not have too.

Service manual should be available, and wiring diagram. We should be able at least be able to fault find or trace wiring between modules.

Exactly!
And since its "so much simpler" than a normal bike, it should be very short.

Since I have it here at work, here are a few screenshots of my 749 Ducati manual, Hawk GT manual, and CBR1000 manual. I wish I had the CR500 manual here, but its in paperback instead of PDF... although I could probably find it online with a google search.
I will only include a page or two from each with the kind of info I would expect with any service manual.

Simple things like:
removing fairing bits.  This isnt even a great manual. its a shit Italian superbike manual with no details.

fork maintenance. basic things like free length of the spring and torque specs are included

the proper routing of wires. SIMPLE but important stuff. this is how to hold the wires with the fasteners on a Honda.

the wiring diagram that has NOTHING to do with powertrain, its just how the entire rest of the bike works. this is from a 26+ year old bike BTW, not some modern thing. Theres an ignition box, but no EFI or anything like that.

Check out the 2016 KTM Freeride E-SM owner's manual - if my Zero came with something like this, I would've been real happy.

I was think of buying a KTM super duke before deciding on Zero. Being able to download service manual and service bulletins was a major plus in deciding to consider KTM.

I have Suzuki SV650 manual Download too.
