Volt electric motorcycles.
« on: April 23, 2016, 03:21:59 PM »

Motorcycle.com has a story about Volt electric motorcycles. http://www.motorcycle.com/features/volt-motorcycles-a-new-name-in-electric-motorcycles.html

While founder Colin Darby wants to "shake up" the electric motorcycle market I don't think Zero has much to worry about. For example, take a look at the rear tire on the Volt 220 electric sport bike. Looks like a car tire! But with  a top speed of only 75 MPH I don't see these flying off the shelf.

Not thats i have any thing against Chinese products, when Chinese decide to make an real high performance electric motorcycle and cars they will.
there government is promoting it to clean pollution out of there cities and remove dependence on foreign oil. They are already making car designs to compete with the major manufactures.

I'm happy about this development, especially as it's just over in Ireland. These bikes are clearly aimed at first timers. The 220 should appeal to learners.

I haven't heard anything from Zero about their new restricted model aimed at learners. It was meant to be out by now.

Let's hope the price is right on all of these bikes. They need to be cheap for the market they're entering.

Provided that they are reliable enough to not cause their owners major headaches, resulting in lots of warranty claims and soon to be followed by a bad reputation and the resulting EV bashing by news articles.  I am still upset about my first two Electric Motorsport electric motorcycles that both suffered major failures (one at only 300 miles and the other at 1500 miles) that could not be repaired by either the manufacturer (because the parts were no longer available) or the retail shop that I bought them from - which shortly afterward went out of business.   :(

I rarely ever go over 75. I guess it might be an issue if you race it at the track. I really think these and similar are aimed more at the world's majority who use a two wheeler for their daily commute and are more concerned with practical issues than racing. I for instance ride a Honda Silverwing and am looking into trading to a Zero FXS or 250 dual sport for daily riding. I'm no beginner, having ridden on the street for 30 years, and am looking to reduce operating costs and maintenance while increasing versatility. Not all "serious" riders are racers or Iron Butt members.

Really, I've never ridden on a highway where the inability to go over 70 or 75 would be a problem.

I commute daily on my Zero SR. If I decide to pass someone I am never going less than 75 MPH before I swing back into my lane again. A max speed of 75 may be alright in town but not on open highway with a 55 MPH speed limit.

I've had the super scooter up to DoD Nominal and beyond, but I can get along without going that fast. (But damn, it sure is fun!)[emoji38]Besides, 55 ought to be enough when the limit is 55. "I'm sorry your honor, but I had to do 75 to pass the car doing 55 in the 55 zone."[emoji6]  Times they are a-changin. Muscle cars are all but gone in favor of little econo-boxes and now the crotch rockets are going out in favor of more efficient commuter bikes. Maybe not in the US yet, but look at international trends.
