Sorry, did not look inside. The shape seen from the top seems the same, so I suspect it is the same inside. Don't know about retrofitting either.

I don't remember, did Zero fix the ABS brake line routing which blocks view of turn signal indicator on 2016 DSR?

Did you notice any charger changes? Battery size is OK (of course it could always be bigger) if they could add a (much) faster charger

Nope, same 110v inlet. Couldn't be any faster than 1.4kW. One had the tank charger, but appeared to be the same speed as before.

It also supprts 230V ;)

Could still be that they tinkered with the existing charger,, although I don't suspect it.

The many years old current charger is in dire need of a modern replacement. You must be able to draw more power in a box with the same physical dimensions with new technology.

Even stuff like delayed starting and limiting the current(for when it's hot) can be added without too much af a hassle right?

I'm really looking forward to a reasonably fast charging solution (>=1C). Technically it's possible and other improvements leaked so far seem to be only minor changes. Can't wait for the official announcement although I don't expect to them to release an improved charge tank :/

It would have to be CCS or Chademo. The inlets for those are kind of large though. At least with CCS, it could have a built in 6.6kW onboard charger for J1772 charging. Put that in there and OMG, you've got a great touring bike. I'm sure the heat and space limitation would be difficult. Not to mention, the (2016) batteries aren't high enough voltage for DCFC standards now, I believe.

I don't know about their market strategy but for Europe they could easily come up with an AC charger since nearly every public charging station supports 11+kW which would be ~1C for the latest S/DS/SR/DSR (since you can't have a charge tank and a power tank simultaneously). But I'd also go with CCS which is a European standard while Chademo is more and more pushed out of the market here. Problem is that the electricity infrastructure (and the emobility politics) in Europe and America is/are very different starting with the normal outlets which have 240V (?) in Europe. Or the fact that every household ground cable has three phases instead of one.

Saw the '17 DSR today, side by side with the '16. I was not interested in riding them, but took a good look.

- new wider and beefier belt with bigger teeth
- new battery pack, 2 modules vs. 4. Same capacity, 13kW as '16. A "half pack" option of the S and DS will be available as someone mentioned
- the new tank cover looks nice, but it does not stretch for that little extra half inch storage and needs a key to open/close (good and bad)
- painted plastics, like car paint
- more torque  higher top speed. Not sure if I heard right, 116 and 106 respectively for the DSR.
- there is some new plastic on the front of the battery, not much different in looks than the old one

Nice.
  • I'll bet the existing belt was the limiter on torque/top speed.
  • Okay, from the photos, it looks like there is still a monolith option in addition to the 6.5 option. I still stand by my assessment that the 6.5 upgrades to a 13 by adding another 6.5 (I saw a name and hardware frame suggesting how this is done; guessing the hardware I saw only goes on the relevant frames).
  • The tank cover looks great. I hope we can order it for older/existing models. At the very least, I'd like to hack out the bin to use to access my tank-installed charger. I'll give up storage in exchange for more weather protection for sure.
  • New battery front plastic... huh. That might have more than a cosmetic reason, if I'm connecting the right dots.

A bit disappointed we didn't get the 32ah cells cos I would have upgraded, looks like I will have to wait another year now. Everything else seems good.
It's hard to tell from the pics, but the front plastic looks the same as before, but the tank is different on the front sides.

Hey BrianTRice,

what do you mean?

I thought the limiter on torque/top speed was the controller.

Thanks,
Mario.

Maybe it wasn't the only limit! But there's no sign that the controller changed for 2017 (yet).

EDIT: Of course, the controller is still the limiting factor for thermal factors with an IPM motor. So, they're probably squeezing the new figures out of the existing controllers and cutbacks kick in as appropriate.
