I just decided that I'm going to buy one of these, but wait until they hit the used market and I will save a bunch of money.

I will be waiting for a while, but that's fine because my yr 2000 Honda Insight has some years left in her.

They will also have to change the little trunk opening to a hatch like the Model S.

I was looking at second hand prices on the Model S the other day. They seem to be holding their value well.  I won't be able to justify buying new because I only cover about 6,000 miles a year by car. Twice that by bike. I'd really love my next car to be fully electric but my wife's not keen at all. It's the charging... I might get away with a plug in hybrid. The range on a Tesla would win the argument over a Leaf.

For a while, Model S's were actually more expensive on the used market than they were new. People didn't want to wait in line six months for a new one, so people peddling their used ones could pretty much ask for the sun and moon for theirs. Doubtful the same will happen with the Model 3, but at least for a while, you might be surprised how little you'll save over buying used.

And don't forget the Model 3 has another trunk in front, which looks to have a much larger opening. You're not going to carry a sheet of plywood in there, but it should be much easier to get a big suitcase in front than in back.

They say the back seat fold down too. Can fit a 7' surf board he said. I'd rather have a hatchback/suv but this car will do the trick for a few years. I'm 40 and this will only be the 2nd brand new car I've ever bought. (The 1st was a Honda Ridgeline in 06).
It makes sense and is the right thing to do (imo).

As far as Tesla holding their value, Tesla was guaranteeing the value over time.
Not sure if that is still the case as more are being produced and sold, or, if
this will apply to Model 3.

Yeah, my wife and I discussed it, and the opinion was that if we got a Model 3 it would be *her* car as she does all the car mileage.

But she loves the look of the car, and its capable of doing the range that she'd need, so she's up for pre-ordering one when they become available in the UK.  ;D

Your wife is cool Justin. :)

Just to be sure for sure, you need to pre-order now. It sounds like you're under the impression that pre-orders are only available in the US at the moment:

It's £1,000 for us Brits. I'd put your money on the table as soon as you can mate.

I've decided that the one for me is the Model X, by the way. Three kids. Wish me luck trying to convince my wife that we should remortgage... ;-)

Just a fun fact by way of comparison to the 300K or so Tesla 3 pre-orders: The entire 2014 production run of Mustangs was 134,082 cars.

I hope for MostlyBonker's vision of the future. A world similar to GATTICA where you pull up at a friend's house, slip the charging plug into your car and go in for dinner. Minus the creepy gene discrimination, but you get the idea. Also, Bonkers might want to take a look at the upcoming plug-in Prius. It appears to be similar to the Volt in range-on-electric with an ICE backup.

I didn't submit for a pre-order for the Tesla 3. Our cars are too new and have too much life left in them. But I suspect the Tesla 3 is going to be our next car.

Yeah I spotted that yesterday, need to have a second chat with my wife about it (its the difference between talking about pulling the trigger and actually pulling the trigger)

bu I expect we'll pre-order this weekend. Gotta be careful as the village is looking to reopen its pub, and want investors... ;)

Becoming an investor and helping to reopen a local pub sounds like a very honourable way to spend one's hard earned money! :-) Let me know when it opens and I'll make a special trip up to give it some custom.

I may have to downgrade my ambitions to a second hand hybrid for my next car. I live in a terrace house so no driveway means no overnight charging. They get funny about people trailing wires across footpaths and I often have to park further down the road. I may enquire with the council about getting a charge point installed but the parking problem won't go away.

This article makes some reasonable speculations about what the Model 3 is doing to optimize aerodynamic drag while keeping manufacturing costs down:

Very interesting.  A demo of the software they use is at http://www.exa.com/en/services/exacloud-simulation-tools
