3D scan of partially disassembled Zero SR '15
« on: December 20, 2015, 10:57:19 PM »

I've been toying around with my Kinect sensor and some SW for some projects that I've been working on (to be posted in subsequent threads) and did a scan of my partially disassembled bike. It's a bit rough around the edges but it allows me to make the measurement I need to fit some parts that I am trying make for the bike.

Attached is pic of what the scan looks like, it can be visualized and manipulated using a free software called Meshlab (http://meshlab.sourceforge.net/).

For those interested in accessing the scan I put it in my public dropbox, you're welcome to PM me for the link to download.

Sorry to resurrect a dead thread, but have you done anything with this scan? I'm considering re-finishing my bike again (I loved the wrap but it just didn't last very long), and it occurs to me that a full 3D model would be very helpful in visualizing finishes and their impacts in a way Photoshop (GIMP) never could. Did you ever break your scan up into individual pieces? What sort of format is the model?

I would love a copy of this.  STL format?

I wonder what it would cost to get a very accurate full-body scan done? We could then chop it up in SolidWorks, just approximating the backs of parts as simple planes. That would be good enough for renderings. The ideal would be to get every part scanned individually, which would be useful for LOTS of purposes. Just being able to create mounting brackets and get them 3D printed would be nice.

It's too big to attach in EMF, but here's a scan of Sam Baker's bike, I think it's a 2014 SR like mine.

This is a 64K facet simplification, takes 24 megabytes, 12 if you zip it.

I simplified the original, and I have permission to re-share.  The original took way more space, and had a lot of noise.  This one's pretty detailed.

It would be cool to overlay the SR '15, get a cleaner scan of the fundamental shapes by lining up and averaging.
