DSR 1st impressions
« on: November 19, 2015, 08:41:57 PM »

I have a 2012 S, 2013 DS and now a 2016 DSR. The amount of change in power and components is similar for each jump. I expected the power increase with the DSR but was pleasantly surprised the ride quality was much better. The suspension improved the most, the stock tires are a big improvement but may not be quite as good for commuting as the Michelin Pilot Road 4 Trails I put on the 2013 DS but will be better off-road. Even the brakes seem a little better. I hope the ABS helps prevent a future fall so should be worthwhile. I love the all black but my wife hates it and is buying me new hi-vis yellow gear.

I hope to move the windshield, heated seat, top box, side cases, J1772, aux 12V, LEDs and running lights for my 2013 DS to the DSR. I know some of the parts wont fit but most should. The 2013 DS is on its way back to Zero for a new battery (in the same crate the DSR came in) with some of the accessories still on it.

Overall I'm very pleased with the new DSR and hear in San Diego I can ride it all year long.

You are not making any sense to me at all.

Here in soon-to-be snowy Ohio, I am trying to get the last few rides in before winter storage.
Congrats on the new ride!

Congrats on the new ride!

I hear you.  I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area, and people are talking about the end of the riding season.  My only explanation is that once you've lived in California for a while, your comfort zone shrinks.  When it cools off to 50 degrees, I see people walking on the street with gloves and big winter jackets while I'm wearing a t-shirt.  Whatever floats your boat.

Not sure how much the heated seat cost but a good Airhawk II works great in winter to keep your butt warm :) I keep mine on year round though as I love this thing.

It doesn't have to... I've lived in LA for 21 years now, but grew up in the Midwest... and I'm still the "t-shirt in the 40s" guy.  I'm planning on riding my SR year-round, when I get it (soon!)...

I ride my SR year round and it gets down to -10F and up to 110F here :D

People often look at me and ask "why are you wearing so much gear when it is 60 out," I then remind them I am going 75mph into a head wind without any windshield or heating.

What is "fun" is when it is 33 out and pouring down rain ... Or snowing but the ground is warm enough it doesn't stick; in that condition wiping my visor every 2 seconds is near mandatory if I want to see where I am going.

Yeah, back in KS I used to ride my VFR in the snow, I got a lot of funny looks back then too. :)

I live in El Cajon (San Diego east country) and commute to San Diego proper (Mira Mesa to be specific). Every year there are several days where I have to deal with patches of ice on the roads because the temperature when I leave home (around 6 am) is still below 32 F. Anybody who's ever spent any time in the desert knows they can get pretty cold sometimes.

I dig out the winter gloves, wear my thermies under my pants, wrap my shemagh around my neck and drink some tea when I get to work. Only the strong survive.

Thread hijack completed; sorry for my part in it.

The heated seat came on the 2013 when I bought it used. I've never used it but one of my kids in Minnesota may get the 2016 DSR after I'm done with it so I may move it to my 2016 if it fits. I lived 22 years in Minnesota and 24 years in Wisconsin riding bikes all year round without heated anything. I'm not as tough now after 11 years in San Diego so anything under -10 F makes me switch from bikes to snowmobiles when I visit in the winter.

The 2013 DS is on its way back to Zero for a new battery (in the same crate the DSR came in) with some of the accessories still on it.

Why is the 2013 getting a new battery? Are you upgrading it or is it a warranty replacement?  They might still have some ZF11.4 packs around for warranty replacements but you would think eventually they would run out and have to start putting new higher capacity packs in for warranty claims.

It is a warranty replacement. If I wanted to wait a couple of months I would get a newer 2015 battery but a 2014 will be fine. Only 2013 had a problem and only from cold areas (got mine used from NY. Anyway I plan on selling it when I get it back. They replaced the BMS and noticed there was a battery problem so they are replacing it with only about 4,000 miles on the bike.

Wouldn't the higher capacity of the 2015 pack increase the resale value? I guess the difference in value might be negligible in the second hand market.  Is it a trade for your 2016 or are you selling the 2013 yourself?

Also, can you see any visual differences between the 2013 motor and the 2016 motor?

Hey vkruger which symptoms were your ds exhibiting? I've got a 2013 s  and it's at the dealer for a problem with no regen on braking (the app has been played with and adjusted) I was wondering about the bms and I'm in southern ontario (not far from where you bought your ds)

I will be selling the 2013 myself.

My BMS had a couple blown resistors that prevented proper balancing. I ride every day and 1 morning it had faulted and only charged to 80%. After that it would take about 8 hours to go from 30% to 80%. A few weeks later it would take 20 hours to do the same so I alternated bikes for a week and then took it into the dealer.

Mine did the same thing it started by me noticing i only had 10 charge bars showing.  Then it felt like the regen was real weak then the recharging started clik claking way too soon to be fully charged.  I got a cheap little smart phone to get the app to check the log, I never really heard anything on that if they got it or used it.  I picked up a kill-a-watt meter per Harlan and the Amps were all over the place 10-5.24-.24 and back in a few seconds. I was getting a blinking code for misc. At the end it was only going to 8 bars and wasn't taking any charge.  They replaced my BMS and then found the battery problem.  I talked to Zero and they said they would replace the battery with a 2014 and when I asked about using a 2015 I was told it wasn't compatible.  Now that could have been a little white business fib with them wanting to get rid of 2014s I don't know.  But since I've had it back it has ran and charged great.
